Hydro Service Expands to 156 Farms in Rossburn August
The Manitoba Power Commission reports August progress with 57 crews at work across the province. Farm service reached 156 farms in Rossburn Municipality and about 50 farms near Benito in Swan River area. The Daly oil field gained power to 62 wells, and two major transmission lines progress, including a new 1000 kva bank at Melita substation. Total August output was 35 107 500 kilowatt hours, up over 20 percent from last year.

Enrolment Expected to Hit Record at Provincial Normal School
Registration at the Provincial Normal School is projected to surpass the 1951-52 record of 425 students. Hon. W. C. Miller, Minister of Education, announced that as of September 17 enrolment stood at 418 with more arrivals anticipated. The previous year enrolled 385 students.

A Lot Of Pumpkin Showdowns At Local Stores

The Angus S D No. 1487 opened its new 45000 dollar school in Angusville after noon Thursday with guests from Silverton Russell and Rossburn. Mike Sirnick led the ceremony with speakers including W S Chaytor Inspector Labossiere M L A Dr Johnson and Rev Denyes. Reeve R G Nield cut the ribbon as 94 pupils attend Grades 1 to 12 in a five classroom one floor building built by Minsh Bros on the old site. Principal J Tutkaluke and teachers Mandziuk Hyra Penonzek staff the school with trustees Sirnick Forrest Siwak Kostiuk Senko Chaytor.

First Births in Rossburn Area Stir Local Debate
Mr Robert Brown of Rossburn claims his sister Mary Brown born December 16 1880 was the first white girl born in the Rossburn municipality. He cites John Moulton Brandon as the first boy born in 1882 on the Stitt Vista farm. An obituary for William John Whaley aged 71, born in Rossburn in 1880, appears elsewhere. The oldest residents born in the village are debated by Howard McIntosh and Joe Peden, with no ages given. Unsettled remain the first boy and girl born in the Village of Rossburn and the first couple married in the Presbyterian Church.

Garretts Return From Overseas Trip
Rev and Mrs J Y Garrett returned home after a long overseas tour. They left Rossburn July 1 bound for Toronto and Montreal then sailed from Quebec July 15 on Scythia, visiting France England and Ireland before returning from Liverpool September 3 aboard Franconia. They arrived Quebec September 16 and Rossburn September 17 after a Toronto stopover. It was their first overseas visit since moving to Canada from County Down Northern Ireland in 1930.

Former Rossburnite Laid To Rest
William John Whaley 71 of 206 Hill St Norwood died September 16 in St Pontifice Hospital. A Rossburn native he worked 35 years as a railway mail clerk retiring 1947 and served in WWI with the 144th battalion in France and Belgium later in the Postal Corps. Survived by a London Ontario daughter and Winnipeg sons, funeral 4 pm September 19 at A B Gardiner with Rev J E Bethel. Burial St James Cemetery.
