Waterworks By Law Fails by Two Votes in Rossburn

Village ratepayers voting last Friday support a $145,000 Sewer and Waterworks By-Law 128 to 88 but fall short of the 60 percent margin needed for a money by-law. Odds are a new election will be held soon as residents seek to fund sanitation and comfort for the town.

Water and Sewage vote leaves village wary and financially strained

A reader laments Friday’s water and sewage decision that resulted in a setback for the village. About 128 supporters warn of the $19 000 grant loss and $14 500 rising spring costs, with canceled by law and election expenses adding financial pressure for a village of roughly 600 residents. Some pensioners oppose the measure, while others who can afford it advocate for the community’s gains. Continued on Page Four.

Local residents report a string of weekend visits and trips. Gladstone couple Mr and Mrs David E Smith visited J W Smith. Winnipeg and Brandon trips featured Peter Lamb Andrew Laboy John Kryso waty and Ronald Antonation. University studies and Winnipeg business trips noted. Charlene McKnee and Arnold McKnee with Charlene in Edmonton enjoyed a holiday at Peter Migas home. Linda Kozyk visited Brandon.

Rossburn Women's Institute Meeting

The September Rossburn WI meeting at the United Church annex had 13 members present. Woolens were collected for a blanket and can be left with Mrs. McKnight by month end. A $25 donation to the 4H Club was approved and groceries given to the Cowper-Smiths. Mrs. McKnight to attend the W.L Leadership School in Brandon in October as delegate. Mrs. Collins of Roblin-Russell will speak at October's meeting. Next meeting set for October 4 at 3 p.m.

Rossburn Game and Fish Assn to Examine Golf Course Land

An executive meeting at Slow's Garage on Wednesday September 19 discussed buying more land for a golf course. Delegates Otto Elvers Jim Andrew Harold Metcalf and Orest Smyc nnik were authorized to study purchase financing and planning. The motion to adjourn followed.

Showers Honor Bride-to-be Matiowski in Winnipeg and Rossburn

A bride elect of October 6 was honored at a linen shower in Winnipeg and a miscellaneous shower in Rossburn Parish Hall on September 1. Lydia Trakalo pinned a corsage and escorted her to a decorated chair as gifts circulated. Mrs. Matiowski and Mrs. McKietiuk sat nearby. a wagon decor, drawn by Detmar Heindle and Kathy Michalchuk, was showcased. The bride expressed thanks, and guests sang For She is a Jolly Good Fellow before a luncheon.

Village Council Sets October Meeting and By Law Revote

The Village of Rossburn council met September 18 with Mayor J. G. Stitt and five councillors present. They approved the August financial and constable reports, transferred land from Rossburn to Islay district, set a Court of Revision for October 25, granted building permits, and arranged a revote on By-Law No. 345 within three to six months. They adjourn to October 16.

Massive potato tops prior record in local garden

Mrs. P. Zemliak of Vista reports digging a 442 pound potato, far surpassing the prior 3 pounds 4 ounces by Jim Smith. Another weekly record is an 11 pound 3 ounce cabbage grown by Mrs. Andy Buskal of Strathclair.

Bride Elect Honored At Shower In Ukrainian Home

A Sunday shower at the Ukrainian National Home honored Miss Livia Kornyk the bride-elect for September 29. Guests were greeted by bridesmaids Phyllis Malaniuk Judy Saley and Shirley Shmyr who presented corsages. The event included an address, gift viewing, and lunch prepared by several hostesses.

A Ukrainian Greek Orthodox church service last Sunday blessed Darryl Steven William Ukrainetz son of Mr and Mrs Don Ukrainetz of Thompson Manitoba. Godmother was Mrs Frank Melnyk and Godfather was Mr Murray Menzies. A dinner reception followed at Mr and Mrs Wm Tanasychuk home Birdtail with grandmothers Mrs Ukrainetz and Mrs Tanasychuk hosting. Guests from Russell Shoal Lake and Fort William Ontario attended.

At the Rossburn Hospital two newborn sons were welcomed by local families. Mr and Mrs Nick Kalyniuk reported a son born on September 7, and Mrs Murray Kalyniuk welcomed a son born on September 12.

Rossburn 4H Sewing Club Meets September 26

The Rossburn 4H Sewing Club will meet at the Rossburn School Auditorium on Wednesday September 26 at 7 30 pm. Open to interested girls ages 10 to 21 as well as ladies and mothers. Camp reports will be presented by Marlaine Brown and Lorrine Yaskiw.
