Rossburn ratepayers vote today on a 145000 waterworks by law that has sparked strong support and opposition. A town hall meeting drew about 100 as experts from Wardrope and Associates and government health boards presented details and answered questions.
Wasyl Spak 82 a Sandy Lake pioneer died quietly August 20 at the Sandy Lake Old Folks Home. Funeral services were held in Russo Orthodox Church and cemetery beside his wife and son. He is survived by daughters and sons, 10 grandchildren, and a brother. Raginski Funeral Home Oakburn arranged.
The Vista United Church Women met at Mrs. Velma Clayton's home with eight members. Mrs. Ethel Brown led devotions. Plans include a front church sign and surprise suppers. contact Mrs. Florence Stitt or Mrs. Isabel Miller to host. Bazaar articles are requested. Next gathering at Mrs. Nellie Brown's. The Mizpah Benediction closed the meeting.
The Hon. George Hutton announces the transfer of Norma Morrison from Russell to Brandon as district home economist effective September 1. She will supervise the district program and manage kitchen staff and menu planning at the Agricultural Extension Centre. Morrison succeeds Martha Quellet who resigned August 15. Morrison is a Nova Scotia native and Mount Allison graduate who joined the Manitoba Extension Service in 1961. The Russell district post is being advertised to fill the vacancy.
Highs reached 81 degrees last week while lows fell to 32. Rainfall was recorded but specifics are unavailable in the readable text.
An accordion recital Friday evening sponsored by Lesie Chopp and pupils drew a large audience. Kent's Accordion College students performed well. The Hospital Aid thanks Lesia for a $57.00 donation.
Mr and Mrs Wrenford Armstrong and daughters of Flin Flon and Mr and Mrs George Armstrong of Estevan Saskatchewan visited this week with Mr and Mrs Walter Armstrong. Mr and Mrs W H Metcalf of Moose Jaw Saskatchewan are visiting their son and daughter in law Mr and Mrs Harold Metcalf. Mr and Mrs Otto Elvers spent Monday in Brandon.
The Rossburn Rural Municipality council met in the council chambers with Reeve Alex Cleland and four councillors present. They approved minutes, adopted August 31 financials, discussed railway crossings near Birdtail, transferred land to Islay district, advertised bids for road mowing, set the 1963 assessment court for October 25, and passed By-Law No. 868 on nominations and elections. They approved bills totaling 18 989.58 and adjourned to October 9, 1962.
A large yield described as a big pot ato grown in Mrs. M. Miller's garden weighed 314 pounds. The item appears in a local Vista news snippet. Miss Lynn Barlow of Shoal Lake visited family over the long weekend. Mrs. Bessie McDonald and Jean Halliday visited Saskatoon with Mrs. Bessie Halliday. Dennis Matiowsky of Winnipeg is home on holidays with his parents. Garry Hamilton of Winnipeg spent the weekend at his home.
Mr and Mrs Paul Loik and daughter Diane of Vancouver arrived by car to spend holidays with Diane's grandparents, Mr and Mrs Peter K Maduke. Mr and Mrs M B Wasilka returned home after a week in Winnipeg.
Tenders will be accepted until 12 o'clock noon Saturday September 22 1962 for care taker duties at the United Church. Work to commence October 1 1962. United Church Women.
The United Church Women's monthly meeting on Tuesday Sept 11 with 18 members present included Hymn 313 read scripture by Mrs Gunn and a devotional from The Word and The Way. Plans were made for a Sept 29 Tea and an Oct 13 fall bazaar with committees for fish pond bake table and tea and bazaar.
Jim Lillie of Vista found two large mushrooms on his farm. One measured seven inches and the other eight inches in diameter. Thursday afternoon W J Hamilton brought a rhubarb stalk to the office measuring six feet five inches in height. Who can top these oversized garden specimens.
The Annual meeting of the Western Region of The Associated Hospitals of Manitoba was held in the Masonic Hall in Killarney on September 6, 1962. Forty two representatives attended from Baldur, Killarney, Birtle, Boissevain, Cartwright, Deloraine, Elkhorn, Glenboro, Hamiota, Hartney, Melita, Ninette, Rivers, Shoal Lake, Souris, Treherne, Virden and Wawanesa with staff members.
