Forage Sainfoin Seen As Bloat-Free Alternative
The article notes sainfoin offers a bloat-free alternative to alfalfa for cattle in Manitoba. It yields about 80 percent of alfalfa, has lower crude protein but similar digestible matter, and tolerates drought, with easy establishment. Key issues are seed hardiness delaying germination and tannins inhibiting nitrogen-fixing nodules, a problem breeders may address.

Sainfoin as a cattle forage in Manitoba faces bloat concerns
Ames Gottfred notes sainfoin may suit cattle feed despite lower forage yield and bloat risk. Nitrogen fertilization or extra rhizobia at planting could boost nodulation and output at under a dollar per acre. A tannin resistant rhizobia strain could improve viability in future research.
