Slon Celebrates 50 Years of Rossburn Garage Start
Fifty years ago on May 1 1938 Maron Slon sold his first gasoline dollar at a Rossburn garage. He watched traffic for three Saturdays and saw opportunity in a car crowded town. Using lumber from his Oakburn sawmill he built the shop on two Imperial Oil lots, hired a mechanic, and paid Imperial five cents per gallon without borrowing. A year later Ford Motor Company recruited him.

Weather statistics from W E Bailey of Birtle show 311.8 mm of rainfall from April 1 to August 31 1988, above 254.9 mm in 1987. The 30 year average is exceeded by 102 percent. August brought 94.5 mm, with highs of 37 C on August 6 and nightly lows down to 2.5 C on August 8 and 28.

Rossburn officials appoint to planning district board
Mayor Morley Kostecky and councillors Kenneth Caldwell and Robert Hunter were named to the Rossburn Planning District board at the Aug 23 village meeting. Kostecky Caldwell Hunter and Shirley Kalyniuk were approved to attend the Manitoba Urban Municipalities area meeting in Birtle on Sept 14 with expenses paid. A Winnipeg meeting Aug 29 discussed a provincial response to a medical manpower crisis. Task Force members include Neepawa councillor Mel Chambers Winkler mayor Henry Wiebe and Mayor Kostecky. Council also noted a drainage concern at the Peter Lee Health plan.
