Rev and Mrs J Rybalka were honored at a joint farewell party in Oakburn as he leaves to serve Hafford parish in Saskatchewan. Mike M Shwaluk chaired the event with Ukrainian Women's Association organizing lunch and tributes from local figures and groups. The couple departed Sept 1 for their new home in Hafford.
A list of Sandy Lake students receiving awards for the coming session from the University. Harry Backlin receives Manitoba Government Bursary 400, Ernest Nowalkowski Government Teachers Training Bursary 800, Nick Demchuk Government Scholarship 150, Raymond Gary Rustephanuk Alpha Sigma Mu Mothers Club Bursary 50, and Legion Scholarship 200.
The Rossburn Women’s Institute met at the United Church Annex on Tuesday September 2 with 13 members attending. Guest speaker Mrs E Langridge discussed The Biggest Country Club In Canada and shared a Niagara Falls travelogue. The treasurer reported 87 80 from Fair Day booth and 15 20 for hospital diapers. A Tag Day for the CNIB is planned for September 13 with a door to door canvass in September.
On Sunday August 24th Rev and Mrs Neil said farewell to their Pentecostal church congregation with heartfelt songs and spoken word. The Lord's Supper was administered and the morning service ended warmly. Monday evening friends met at Mrs J S Huston's home for a social and presented a substantial purse in appreciation.
The Canadian National Institute for the Blind celebrates forty years since its 1918 federal charter. It notes a shift from begging to employment for willing blind Canadians and cites twenty three residences, including Winnipeg with eighty four beds. The article urges public support for the Annual Appeal.
About 19 Catholic Indian children returned to Sandy Bay Indian Residential School at Marius Manitoba on Saturday morning August 30 1958 A special bus chartered by the Indian Dept carried these children from Elphinstone and Erickson Manitoba Mixed emotions marked the scene as they boarded the bus Some waved and smiled while others wiped away tears Those returning to various schools include Birtle Indian School Fort Alexander Portage la Prairie and Brandon Gerald Cloud heads to Birtle Grade X Kingsley Two Voice moves to Assiniboine Indian High School Grade IX The Indian Department assists with educational facilities for these moves.
Social visits include Mr and Mrs Ray Grant of Silvis Illinois and Mrs Nona Peden plus friends. IHC dealer Mike Werbowski toured Chicago August 4 5 and Hinsdale Illinois to view tractors. High School in Rossburn opened September 2 with 76 pupils across grades 9 to 12, up from last term.
A sequence of sunny periods, cool Saturday, rainy Sunday, windy warm Monday greeted visitors in Rossburn. Ground frost noted Thursday morning. Official low temperature 84.6.
Angusville News reports the opening of Angusville School on August 26 with five new beginners Angie Smick Bobby Katchin Carol Ferguson Myron Chuchmuch and Brian Rodeck. It lists new high school entrants Patsy Wowk Evangeline Kawka Margie Duftre Marion Kostiuk Lillian Sawaryn and cites room-by-room pupil counts and teachers.
Rossburn crews began Mountain Avenue excavation ahead of hard surfacing. Stan Wa wrick’s equipment advances northward from the Elite Cafe, with dirt hauled filling the old slough north of Slow’s Garage. Dry weather aided the pace.
Three weddings of local interest were solemnized over the past weekend. The couples were George Clarke with Rose Tanasychuk, Donald Hart with Joyce Mitchell, and Arnold Streibel with Mary Strank. A full report will appear in the next issue.
A 500 pound black bear was killed on Tuesday August 26 on the middle of Maduke's Lake by Walter and Ernie Maduke. The bear fled to the water after a chase by boat and about fifty spectators watched from the shore.
The St Michael's Ukrainian Greek Orthodox church held a farewell party for Rev Rybalka who is transferred to Hafford Sask after three years in Sandy Lake. Eugene Maluk welcomed guests as Ukrainian folk dancing followed a lunch hosted by the Ukrainian Women's Association. D O Didyk presented a funds purse while John Fedorkin and Andrew Prokopchuk spoke briefly.
The Sandy Lake School begins the fall term with seven teachers led by Nick Peech. New staff include Edward Milanchuk as Assistant Principal and janitor Steve Ralyk. Remaining teachers are Mrs. Helen Kokurudza Grade IX, Nick Pereski Grades VII, Mrs. Anne Pereski Grades V and VI, Mrs. Tillie Rystephanuk Grades III and IV, and Mrs. Anne Kristolowich Grades I and III.
