The Village of Rossburn special meeting August 29 accepted sand and sidewalk tenders. Mike Borodie won sand at 0.90 per cubic yard. Mike Chomica won sidewalk at 2.25 per running foot.
John Anderson died August 13 1966 at Sacred Heart Hospital Russell in his 92nd year. Born May 28 1874 at Wingham Ontario he settled at Melita Manitoba then Angusville for 44 years. A noted curler and lifelong sportsman he was predeceased by wife Florence and children Leslie and Jean Nichol. Funeral at Melita August 16 with interment in Melita Cemetery.
Patricia Margaret Adele Hamilton wed Donald Richard Craven in Branford at Knox United Church at 4 p.m. The ceremony featured white gladioli and ferns, with Rev. Wm. Burgess officiating. Roberta Rose sang two pieces including The Lord's Prayer.
Three Vista 4 H girls had articles selected for Brandon and Virden fairs. Gail Woycheshin earned a mauve ribbon for place mats at Virden. Sheila Brown took a purple ribbon for a sample book at Brandon and a mauve for a stuffed toy at Virden. Debra Baker received a Virden ribbon for her sample book.
The United Church Camp Wasaga on Clear Lake hosted 566 campers 95 counsellors 8 directors 6 nurses a swi instructor and 4 cooks during the June 27 to August 20 season. Camp weeks included Hi-C Intermediate Boys Girls and Junior sessions under Camp manager Rev. G. E. Waddell with staff Chevyl Harrison Wendy Wareham and others assisting.
Two death notices from August 1966 report Er nest G. McLeod of Solsgirth and George Andrew Middlemass Wight of Rossburn passing away. McLeod aged 73 died in Birtle Hospital with funeral at Selsgirth United Church and interment at Argyle Cemetery. Wight aged 91 died at Virden Hospital with funeral at Rossburn Knox United Church and interment at Rossburn Cemetery.
The Rossburn Golf Club annual Men's Open fall tournament drew 68 golfers despite cool wet weather. Doug Joiner won Championship Flight with 109 for 27 holes. Russ Ivey and Glen Robinson took second and third. Various flights awarded to players from Dauphin, Binscarth, Russell and Balmertown. Visiting golfers from several towns joined 19 locals. Course and clubhouse praised. sand greens kept in good condition by teenage helpers.
Rossburn Elementary School welcomed its first day with a fourteen teachers on staff and a full Grade 8 lineup. The staff includes Kindergarten through Grade 8 teachers such as Mrs M Kalyniu k Miss Peggy Mitchell Miss Lois Clark Miss Irene Forbes Miss Linda Hansen Miss Barbara Eshelb yck and others with Supervising Principal Mr C G Erickson.
The region enjoyed generally warm and pleasant conditions last week. A severe thunderstorm occurred around midnight Saturday followed by heavy showers Sunday afternoon, with daily temperatures ranging from the mid 70s to mid 80s and cool nights.
Five district farmers swathed 70 acres of wheat on Willis Stitt’s farm in a community display of neighborliness. Lorne Hrysak Jack Miller and Harold Brown helped Carman Brown swathe 60 acres of barley while others had previously worked summer fallow. Willis remains in hospital recovering from the August accident and such acts are deeply appreciated and remembered.
