Anstett seeks comments on police service funding
Winnipeg Municipal Affairs Minister Andy Anstett announced a report on the costs of policing Manitoba municipalities outside Winnipeg has been sent to municipal officials and groups for review. The Advisory Committee on Policing Costs, formed last May, includes Reeves Alan Beachell and Dave Harms of UM M and Mayors Max Friesen and Jim Tomko of MAUM, with Charles Gallap as alternate. The committee, chaired by the Department of Municipal Affairs’ research coordinator, aims to identify funding inequities and propose a fair grants formula. Currently rural and small towns receive free RCMP service costing the province about 25 million dollars, while larger urban areas must provide their own police or contract RCMP, with varying grant support.
