Voting Day Next Wednesday in Rossburn Ward Three

On Wednesday October 23 Ward Three voters in the R M Rossburn will choose between Joe Borowski and Mike Gawryluk for councillor. Retiring councillor Mike Pawluk leaves the field as residents of Rossburn also vote in a referendum on liquor licenses for restaurants beverage rooms and dining rooms.

Vista Women’s Institute Recaps Charity Drives

The October Vista Women’s Institute meeting at Mrs. V. Halliday’s home drew 10 members and 2 visitors. Boxes for cancer research donations were arranged in local stores, and used clothing will be sent abroad via the Unitarian Service Committee. Contributions may be left with Mrs. Edith Young by month’s end. members heard a report from Mrs. Nettie Hrysak on the W I Board Meeting and admired cake decorating by Mrs. Anne Drozda. A community lunch followed hosted by Halliday with assistance.

Ukr. Women’s Association Meeting in Oakburn

The Ukrainian Women’s Association branch of Oakburn held its regular monthly meeting on October 3 with 17 members present. President Mrs. P. D. Kowal opened the session, minutes were read and adopted, literature from the head office was distributed, and plans were set for a Thanksgiving service on October 14, a Fowl Supper on October 24, and the annual meeting November 7 at 8 p.m. Mrs. Kowal thanked members for flowers, cards, and a gift for her newborn son. The gathering adjourned with a raffle won by Mrs. John Krysowaty.

Boy Scouts Plan Car Wash This Saturday

The 1st Rossburn Scout Troop resumes activities after summer with an officer election same as last year and a Court of Honor decision to sell annual calendars. A car wash is set for Saturday October 19 at Slons Garage and the People's Store from 1 to 4 pm, $1 per car. Money raised funds scouting equipment.

Kindergarten Classes Begin in Town Hall Basement

The Mayor and Town Council have allowed the Kindergarten Committee to use the Town Hall basement for classes. A small rent fee will be charged. Classes start Monday October 21 at 1 30 pm with registration at 1 15 pm. Open to all five year old preschoolers.

Mankir 73 Dies After Short Illness at Rossburn

Mr Nickolas Mankir aged 73 died at Rossburn Hospital on Tuesday October 8 after a short illness. Born in western Ukraine he emigrated to Canada in 1910 and farmed near Mears before retiring to Rossburn in 1954. Survived by wife Mary two sons John of Winnipeg and Bill of Rossburn a daughter Anne Sylvestre of Grand Rapids Man and four grandchildren. Funeral held Saturday October 12 from Rossburn Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church with burial in Gr Orthodox Cemetery. Pallbearers were Morris Michalchuk L McMillan Mike Ternovetsky Annie Sylvestre Dan Zurwell and Leo Gensorek. Rae's Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Weather report and golf interest at Fishing Lake

A mid summer weather stretch brings warm sun and mild nights across western Manitoba. The Fishing Lake resort golf course saw 40 golfers post on Sunday as residents enjoy the season. Temperatures range from mid 60s to upper 70s with highs around 78 and nightly lows near 44 to 52 across Oct 11 to Oct 17.

Rossburn and Russell face tough football loss in Rossburn

Rossburn High lost to Russell High 33 to 6 on September 27 with Ricky Hamilton scoring the lone Rossburn touchdown. Oakburn and Elphinstone also defeated Rossburn in separate games. The Rossburn girls volleyball team suffered defeats from Elphinstone and Oakburn, with another loss to Oakburn on October 15.
