Shocking Population Loss Revealed In Census Figures

Rural Manitoba shows a sharp population drop in the last five years. In the Rossburn Birtle Shoal Lake Strathclair Harrison Hamiota and Silver Creek area the population declined from 9643 in 1966 to 8299 in 1971 a roughly 14 percent loss. Five towns and villages gained slightly while Binscarth fell, and unincorporated areas are included in RM totals amid broader planning and spending concerns.

Scout St A Leadership Training in Brandon

Scout St A offers a leadership training for Brownie and Guide leaders in Brandon on Saturday October 23 from 3 to 5 PM at the St Michael's School auditorium with a pot luck supper to follow and car arrangements arranged by Bonnie Martin and Mary Komhyr. A second leadership training for Cub and Scout leaders will be at the Collegiate in Birtle on October 26 at 7 30 PM. Leaders should wear uniforms and the event is open to current and prospective leaders.

Surprise Gathering At Shermeta Home

A Sunday gathering at Mr. and Mrs. Bill Shermeta’s country home featured close relatives and friends joining a surprise party organized by Bill’s Winnipeg sisters Martha David son Kay Slobodesky and Nettie Cooley of Selsgirth. A Thanksgiving dinner was served and gifts were presented for the couple’s new town home. Their son Terry spoke of retirement plans as out of town guests from Edmonton Winnipeg Neepawa and Vista attended.

Community clubs in Angusville Elphinstone Inglis and Russell discuss hiring Diane Stacey from Tantallon as a single instructor for multiple locations. Stacey holds fourth Figure Test Senior Bronze Dance and Bronze Free Skate. Schedule lists Russell Inglish Anguville Elphinstone and times. Also notes new recreation funds up to 20 hours at five dollars per hour for programs by March 15 1972 and two Defensive Driving Courses starting November 30 in Angusville and January 3 in Oakburn. Meeting on Hunter Farmer relations posted by Rossburn council

The Rural Municipality of Rossburn met on October 12 1971 with Reeve John Mitchell and councillors. Delegations from Riding Mountain National Park and the Department of Mines discussed hunter farmer relations and wildlife issues. A meeting with officials is set for October 20 1971 to continue the discussion.

Weekend vandalism and theft hit local properties and equipment

Over Saturday night and Sunday morning vandals damaged Frank Melnyk’s two Case combines on leased land at Lizard Point Indian Reserve, with repairs needed after extensive impact. A 1972 Ford suffered three broken windows and truck wires were torn at M. Slow and Sons compound. A Mancowhey truck was pulled from mud, and Nick Karmazenuk’s garage door opened theft led to his car later found in Brandon and recovered. Total losses run into hundreds.
