Manitoba New Motor Vehicle Act Set To Take Effect

The Manitoba Attorney General explains the new Motor Vehicle Safety Responsibility Legislation effective December 1. It aims to reduce highway injuries and ensure compensation for accident victims. If an accident causes injury death or property damage over 25, vehicle registration and license are suspended and the vehicle impounded until security up to 11,000 is posted and proof of financial responsibility is shown. Insurance provides security and future responsibility proof, with a simple police proof method via a card. A fund funded by up to 1 per vehicle per year supports unsatisfied judgments, capped at 175,000. If a judgment exceeds 100, the fund may cover it after unsuccessful collection. An informational folder will be available at service stations and from the Manitoba Motor Vehicle Branch.
