Rossburn residents mourn the death of 35 year old Thomas Craig Mitchel who served with the Fort Garry Horse from 1941. He saw action in France and was wounded in Holland on February 21 1945. He leaves a widow Agnes two daughters Mavis and Gertrude a son Barrie his mother and four brothers and two sisters. A military funeral will be held in the town hall Thursday at 2 p.m. November 20.
At a meeting last week Rossburn Red Cross elected new officers President H F Neable vice president Mr Walsh secretary treasurer Mr Hutton An executive committee of four men was chosen The Ladies Work Committee is again active They seek names of willing workers and ask those unable to donate services to contact Mrs Lindsay secretary The social committee includes four ladies The piece emphasizes Red Cross mission and wartime relief.
The Rossburn Curling Club held its first meeting after organizing on October 3. Officers elected include Hon. president W. W. Wilson M.L.A. president John Cormack recording secretary J G Stitt treasurer R N Hutton and committee members H Alexander J Lindsay and H J Bowley.
Mr and Mrs A E Wakefield marked their second anniversary this Sunday with a 16 guest table. Mrs W A Clubley left Thursday for Winnipeg for medical treatment and a speedy recovery is wished by Winnipeg children. United Church ladies bazaar and tea set for November 22 at C A Menzie s building 3 to 5 PM.
A surprise gathering at Mr and Mrs H Miller's home Wednesday evening featured gifts of an electric lamp and iron from valley friends. The event included games, singing, and a dainty lunch. Tom Maxwell leaves for Winnipeg for new employment. Norman Major family of Virden buys Paris Cafe and opens Wednesday. Mrs John Cormack returns from Winnipeg holiday.
A community play sponsored by Mrs. Pete Melnick and Mrs. N Hersack was staged in Ruthenia hall on Saturday evening. Proceeds were donated to the Red Cross.
Sunday visits at Crookshanks home mark a quiet community week. Birth announced for Mr. and Mrs. JFred Plante’s son born Friday November 14. Manitoba Pool elevator annual meeting held November 10 with good attendance. Gluska reports Winnipeg convention. Crossley outlines finances. Poloway reviews year’s activity. Junior Ladies’ Aid serves lunch. Audrey Palmer shower gifts and Vancouver wedding plans with Keith McIntosh. Theatre shows Gene Autry in Sioux City Sue on November 24 25. Angusville W M S tea and Penafores sale set for November 26.
Mrs Jack Halliday hosts a Christmas gift sale in C A Menzie’s shop on December 6. The Rossburn theatre screens Smoky this week showing Thursday Friday and Saturday November 20 21 22.
Oakburn residents and relatives are listed as weekend visitors and travelers. Paul Mychalyshyn of Rackham, Mrs W P Luhowy and Nadia, Dan E Holubitsky, J A Antonation and daughters Sonya and Sylvia, and Steve Dunits returned from visits to Winnipeg Calgary and British Columbia. Frank Zu visited Winnipeg last week.
Mrs Appolonia Luhowy widow of Panko Luhowy died at her Oakburn area farm home on Nov 5 after months of illness. Survived by sons Adam William Michael and four others and by three daughters. Funeral held at Oakburn Greek Catholic church with burial in Oakburn cemetery. She was a pioneer settler cherished by the community.
