Manitoba Hydro rate freeze to stay in place for another year
Manitoba will maintain its hydro rate freeze for at least one more year despite a recommendation for an immediate increase. Energy Minister Wilson Parasiuk said deficits would be covered by a $100 million reserve, with forecasts showing further deficits due to low water flows, higher interest and inflation. A technical report warned continued freeze could yield $22.7 million deficit in 1982-83 and $59.6 million in 1983-84, risking reserve exhaustion and a 31 percent revenue rise in 1984-85.
