Rural Council Holds Routine Meeting in 1965

The Rural Municipality of Rossburn council met May 11, 1965 in the council chambers with Reeve Alex Cleland and five councillors present. They approved minutes, adopted the April financials, hired Steve Derkach as second patrol operator, sought a tax refund on gasoline used for roads, paid 1961 tax notices, accepted a fuel tender to Dec 31, 1965, approved bills totaling 3039.69, and adjourned to June 8. Thirty-one land parcels were sold at the tax sale, nine to outside buyers, the rest to the municipality.

James Gillies Souness Passes Away at 83

James Gillies Souness died Saturday at Rossburn Hospital aged 83. Born in Haddington Scotland in 1882 he came to Canada in 1903 to work for James Halliday and local farmers then homesteaded at Borkton. He moved to Vista in 1954 and remained there. Survived by one sister and two nieces in Scotland and Ontario, with close friends the V Halliday family. Funeral held at Rae's Funeral Home with Rev. McColl officiating. Pallbearers named Armstrong Stitt Muirman Halliday Baker Halliday.

United Church Women Meet in May Session

Weather shifts to warmth and wind as ice thaws

Following heavy rains, this week turned warm with windy spells. Fishing Lake was ice free by Monday evening. The record highs reached 89 on May 12 1958 and a low of 21 on May 9 1961.

Pelly Trail Teachers Take Modern Maths Course

Teachers from the Pelly Trail School Division meet at Russell and Oakburn on alternate Saturdays to learn the new mathematics program to be launched in the fall term. About 40 educators attend each session. Inspector Klym organized the course with the division association of the Manitoba Teachers' Society, and instructor Mr. M. Kawehuk from Major Pratt Collegiate leads sessions.

English Nurses Start Duties at Rossburn Hospital

Mr and Mrs Don Stitt spent the week end in Winnipeg where they met Miss Jean Armstrong and Miss Mary Seal who arrived from England. Miss Armstrong and Miss Seal are registered nurses and began nursing duties at Rossburn Hospital this week.

Manitoba Highway 45 improvements included in 1965 plan

The Manitoba Highways construction program for 1965, announced by Minister Wal ter Weir, includes major work on Highway No. 45 from Rossburn to Oakburn. Other items cover gravel bases, grade and widening, asphalt surface treatments, and bridge projects on routes 21 41A 83 and 4 near Elphinstone Rossburn Halls Bridge Benito and Madge Lake Corner.

Cubs Scouts and Parents Host Pot Luck Supper

The Rossburn event gathered Cubs Scouts and parents in the town hall basement with a meal and program led by Scoutmaster E Stefanuk. Proceeds totaled 141 dollars gross with 71 dollars net after prizes, aiding upcoming Camporee and Cuboree events at Shoal Lake.

The May meeting of the Rossburn United Church Women was held in the church annex. Mrs Veitch and Miss Hay led devotions, with Hymn 206 sung and scripture read by Miss Hay from First Kings chapter 18. Mrs Veitch delivered the topic, prayer by Miss Hay, and Mrs Cormack gave a Brazil study. The president Mrs L Veitch led the business meeting.
