No Increase in Village Taxes at Rossburn Meeting

At a special Rossburn Village Council meeting Friday evening in 1961 the mill rate was set at 68 mills, unchanged from the previous year.

Health Unit Executive Meeting at Birtle April 19

The Birtle-Shoal Lake Health Unit held an executive board meeting at Birtle on April 19 with Dr R L Miles as chair and eight others present. They adopted the previous minutes with one alteration and discussed the Winnipeg conference outcomes. The unit plans improved staffing to speed progress and notes poor turnout at Well Baby Clinics with hopes for better attendance as facilities are publicized.

The Rossburn C O F Bingo held at the Rossburn Town Hall basement last Tuesday listed winners for each Draw. Ham Geo Lazaruk won a lunch kit, Mrs Blaskiewicz claimed $2 and a ham, Nick Karmazenuk took a cake pan and mix, Matt Sidlar a pillow case, Mervin Crook shanks 5.00, E Tay 200, and Nick Karmazenuk $2 with Mrs Brown and Mrs Kozun among others collecting additional prizes.

The Hospital Aid held its monthly gathering at Mrs J Lawless home with 16 members and 2 visitors. Mrs McIntosh reported on a recent meeting in Shoal Lake and a Hospital Week tea is set for May 13 in the Hospital sitting room with a hospital tour. Dinner will be served at the Regional Board meeting in Rossburn. Mrs Taylor won the jackpot brought by Mrs M Lawless.

Harry Komher 73 died Thursday at Shoal Lake Hospital after a life split between Western Ulraine origins Canada and Rossburn. Rural Council Sets 1961 Tax Levy and Gravel Tender

The Rural Municipality of Rossburn held a special meeting on April 29 1961 to set the 1961 tax levy and review gravel tenders and a second part time patrol operator application. Levy fixed at 23.5 mills uncontrollable and 32 mills controllable total 55.5 mills. Mike Borodie Oakburn Manitoba awarded gravelling for 1961. No decision on a second patrol operator due to a single applicant. Meeting adjourned to May 9 1961 at 1 PM.

Residents urged to draw hall water from the Curling rink well due to hall well drying. The rink well was pumped, tested, and approved for general use with excellent water, though it may need pumping again. Electric motor and pump jack available to interested villagers in Rossburn.

Water Safety Group Forms for Silver Beach Activities

The Russell council chambers heard representatives from Angusville Birtle Binscarth Inglis Silver Beach and Russell districts discuss expanding a water safety program at Silver Beach eight miles north of Angusville. The Silver Beach Youth Activities Club was formed with Stefanishyn as president and a five member executive to coordinate extended swimming instruction and related youth activities.
