A Manitoba survey shows a 21 percent rise in water in marshes and potholes and more ducks than last year. Biologists caution waterfowl numbers remain below the ten year average and nesting success is worrying, with only 11 to 22 of every 100 nesting females likely to raise young.
The article notes the poor success rate results from loss of nesting cover around prairie potholes and marshes. Removal of tall grass and vegetation at waterbody edges leaves nesting ducks exposed to predators like foxes and skunks.
Lawn bowling was one of eight popular events at the Senior Citizens' Olympics held recently in Rossburn, drawing strong participation from local residents. The report notes its popularity among other results from the gathering.
The first warm days increased grasshopper activity across Miniota Birtle Shoal Lake and Rossburn RMs. Samples show up to 300 grasshoppers per square metre with 75 125 per square metre common. Spraying costs run about 7.00 per acre and RMs may fund or assist control efforts.
Manitoba Agriculture entomologist Jay Moe Cullough warns that bare field edges show grasshoppers and untreated fields will suffer as they mature. He notes nymphs are small, appearing at the second growth stage, with development delayed only by weather and spring warmth.
National Parks Centennial celebrations unfold in Riding Mountain National Park starting June 30 with an 8 PM opening at Main Beach Wasagaming. Events include a treasure hunt, tent painting by children, an evening concert by Charlie Watt Band and Bad Icelanders, a July 1 children’s treasure run, art display of painted Centennial tents, Commemorative Cairn unveiling by veterans, and a 1 PM children’s concert featuring Jamie Oliviero and Heidi Hunter with free entry for grandparents and treasure hunt participants.
