The Rossburn village council met June 17 1969 with Mayor J W Cormack and councillors in attendance. They acknowledged a petition about lagoon air pollution and forwarded it to Health. The recreation commission report was adopted and $70 reimbursed to Janice Tokar for Baton Leadership Course expenses. A $25 grant to Rossburn Lions Club for dental services was approved. Revised 1969 tax roll assessments were added. A bylaw to restrict loading zone parking near Rossburn Hotel was proposed. The meeting adjourned to July 15 1969.

Summer Recreation Program Begins In Rossburn District
The Rossburn and district Recreation Committee launches a July only summer program for village and district youths. It centers on swimming lessons at Rossman Lake the first two weeks with no fixed schedule and moves to town for the final two weeks. Senior students Betty Ann Slon Diane Kiez and Theresa Sawchuk will run activities with Tony Kalechyn supervising. A 50 cent registration fee covers equipment. the committee takes no responsibility for accidents.

Farewell gathering for Mr and Mrs Denis Nevin
A farewell gathering was held Friday at the L. Willett cabin at Rossman Lake. Rev G Fulford presented a silver tray and Mrs Sterling Veitch gave a wall plaque from the Rossburn U C W. The Nevins plan to travel to Ireland at month end and will reside in British Columbia upon returning.

Close Lead For Graham In Birtle Russell Riding
Completion of vote counting Wednesday evening shows Progressive Conservative Harry Graham leading New Democrat Don Kostesky by about 100 votes with Liberal John Braendle behind. Voter turnout reached 71.4 percent in the Birtle Russell provincial election. Hospital vote totals are pending next week. Graham blames federal inaction on farming aid and urges cross party effort toward federal assistance.

Moorhead Reading Conference Draws Teachers From North America
Seventeen states and four Canadian provinces sent 280 teachers to the Fifteenth Annual Moorhead Reading Conference held June 16 to 20. Canada provided 70 delegates while 210 hailed from the United States. The event is renowned for attracting top reading experts as speakers and resource people with five invited speakers this year recognized for significant contributions in reading research and teaching. Pelly Trail School Division contributed six teachers across elementary to senior high levels.

Lake of the Prairies Named for New Manitoba Reservoir
Rossburn Elementary School students in grade six submitted the winning name Lake of the Prairies for the new 40 mile long lake behind Shellmouth Dam on the Assiniboine River. More than 80 entries were received from grades one to nine across several divisions. The winning class will receive a provincial pin, a classroom plaque, and the school an eight volume set of Ernest Thompson Seton books. The name will be reviewed by provincial and federal authorities for final approval. The Shellmouth Dam project includes flood control and recreation facilities at Asessippi Provincial Park opening for Manitoba’s centennial in 1970.

Rossman Lake hosts a Barbecue Supper on Sunday June 29 with a full day of events led by the Rossburn Game and Fish Association. Activities include a fastball game at 11:00, music at 1:30, ball games at 2:00 and 8:00, baton twirlers at 2:30, supper at 4:00, church service at 7:00, and a fish derby from 9:00 to 5:00 with a $1 entry. Adult supper $2, children $1, preschool free. proceeds fund resort improvement.
