Letters from Edmonton and Morris show growing interest in the 50th anniversary Rossburn Agricultural Society fair set for July 14. Respondents recall past fairs, old ties, and plans for comfort and seating while recalling rain and restorations from earlier events.
Last week a Rossburn Manitoba report misnamed attendees at the school opening. The telegrams from former students and MLA Bob Smellie express congratulations, noting June 11 attendance and June 10 graduates in a community education event.
Accommodations for over 100 young people as the Senior Young People's camp runs June 26 to 29 at the M F A Camp on Clear Lake. Manitoba Federation of Agriculture Youth Department plans a three day program of study recreation and outdoor activities with a theme Why are you doing what you do when you do. Kris Thorsteinson of Federated Co operatives Limited will lead sessions and discussions. A Working Bee and Gala Saturday Night Party are planned. Open to ages 16 and up with Friday evening start. Bus arrivals coordinated. first camp at site this season, and Children's Camps begin July 1 for six weeks. Some 13-15 senior and 9-10 10-11 Junior camp slots remain. register by June 24.
A June 16 meeting at Slow's Garage drew 19 members. Boundary line work with John Klym was authorized, water safety talk by Cpl Bullen, pheasant notes by Gillespie and Loney, and plans for a joint Russell and Rossburn picnic on July 19 with a fish derby. A bingo, a lake site radio blackout, well drilling by Pete Robinson, and magpie control grants discussed.
Local report notes Mr. and Mrs. Pete Zegalski and Steve attended Joyce’s graduation from Teachers' College in Winnipeg last week. Steve Danyleyko is building a new house on his farm north of town and serves as the chief carpenter.
The Ukrainian Women’s Association of the Greek Orthodox Church hosted a June 17 1959 bingo and raffle at the Ukrainian National Home. Attendance was strong and proceeds totaled 37.50. Prizes donated by members varied from a plastic juice set to dishes with winners named for each item.
Fred Parmentier of Inglis won the U G G Trophy as Champion Plowman in the North Western Manitoba Plowing Match held in Russell on June 10. D R Coulter and Gavin Coulter of Silverton took second and third in the 3 bottom class. Angus Coulter led the 4 H division with Gordon Coulter second and Wally Miller third. George Honey noted for third time in five years as Russell Pool Elev vice president. Closing remarks by Tom Kieper and Logie Johnson with prize money presented by Johnson.
The Rossburn Village Council held its regular session on June 16 with Mayor Moffat presiding. The by law to rescind Thursday afternoon closing in favor of all day Monday was passed after input from the Rossburn retail merchants.
The MFA District No. 3 convention at Minnedosa passed a resolution urging government to adopt Bracken Committee boxcar allocation recommendations. Other approved actions covered rail demurrage charges, education, social and economic research, librarians, hog policy, and reorganization. D. A. McNabb was re elected provincial director. Mrs. W. A. Gamey joined the Women’s Committee. Vic Fulton named CFA delegate. board members and youth committee members were elected including Lorne Radcliffe and Keith Robertson.
Donated items include water jug and pickle dish by Mrs. G Hlagy and sponge flowers by Ukr Women’s Assoc of the Church. Prizes were won by Mrs. Matusko, Bill Pokropany, Mrs. Semeniuk and others. Draws awarded 1st electric clock to Mrs Antonichuk, 2nd picnic basket to Carl Tucker, 3rd cake plate to Steve Pokropany.
