R.H.O.S.P. changes: old furniture rule returns bursts with limits
The federal budget revives using R.H.O.S.P. funds for furniture and appliances through 1983 but with strings. If funds are used for purchases after budget night April 19, no current year tax deduction applies and item eligibility excludes TVs. A new $10,000 income deduction for eligible R.H.O.S.P. holders buying a newly built home by December 31, 1984 is available, though it excludes the Canada Home Ownership Stimulus grant. Consult a tax official or advisor to avoid costly mistakes.
