Weather shortfall hits Birtle Rossburn dry spring tale

Weather statistics from the Atmospheric Environment Service Winnipeg show Birtle with 21.8 mm rain from April 1 to May 13, 84 percent of normal, while Rossburn recorded 14 mm, 54 percent of normal. Russell 17.6 mm, 138 percent of its normal. Soil moisture in crop district 3, including Shoal Lake, Rossburn and Birtle, appears adequate topsoil 46 percent and subsoil 53 percent. Provincially, totals below long term averages, rainfall ranges 35 to 149 percent by station, with regional totals from 104 to 73 percent across regions. A late-week rain may improve totals for the next report.

Rossburn Grade 8 students and chaperones left after classes on May 31, raising 7600 dollars for a Banff expedition. The group plans a daily journal to link travel with science, geography and history lessons and will return home on June 8.
