Rossburn hosts its third annual Queen's Day tournament on June 10 offering 300 in prizes for the senior baseball event. A town hall dance featuring Art Olson's Orchestra follows the games while Little League and Pony League tournaments may be canceled if Queen's Day is not a school holiday.
A program was presented by the girls with thanks going to Mr. Alston who kindly acted as accompanist. Lunch was served by the girls and the evening was enjoyed by all.
Rossburn again failed to win a Little League game at Birtle. Birtle's Bruce Flower and Jack Dodds led scoring while Ross's Kieth Elvers and Brian Kowal pitched. Final score 13 to 4 at Birtle.
Friday evening the Rossburn seniors battled Russell to a 3-3 draw on local grounds. Russell scored three first-inning runs while Rossburn added singles in the 4th 5th and 6th. Jack Ross pitched for Rossburn with R Custer relieving in the 6th for Russell.
Rossburn fell 10 to 8 as Shoal Lake edged ahead with a strong late surge. Pitchers Keith Evers and Brian Kowal faced Shoal Lake’s Donnie Patterson and Ken Harrison, with Shoal Lake scoring in the final innings to secure the win.
Last Wednesday evening at Shoal Lake the local Midgets won a close 3-2 game. Ko zun starred for the locals while Don Menzie and Howard Hamilton pitched for Shoal Lake. final score details show Rossburn 020 10 3 Shoal Lake 000 11.
Rossburn Midgets and Birtle fought to a 5-5 draw at the fair grounds. Kozun pitched effectively for Rossburn, while Ray Denham handled the mound for Birtle in a scoreless final frame to preserve the tie.
Mr and Mrs J Sherrett marked their 50th wedding anniversary with two reception periods on May 24 at their Rossburn Manitoba home attended by about eighty relatives and friends. They were married May 24 1904 at Seeburn and lived in Shoal Lake before moving to Rossburn in 1922 and retire there in 1948. Their children are David Pearl and Raymond all of Rossburn with out of town guests from Winnipeg Moose Jaw Angusville Foxwarren and Solsgirth.
Mrs William Buchanan former Rossburn district resident died after a lengthy illness at her home in Jackson Michigan She was born in Amsterdam New York sixty four years ago and came to Birdtail in 1910 She married William Buchanan in 1911 and they farmed before moving to Jackson Michigan She is survived by her husband two daughters May Wilmot Irene and one son Charles all of Jackson Michigan The Buchanans were long time district residents now living away
The Manitoba Urban Association held its mid season conference in Killarney last Thursday with attendees from Rossburn led by Councillors J. I. Huston and Wm. Antonichuk and Mayor E. Moffat along with Harris Huston. The program featured welcome remarks by Mayor J. A. V. David and speeches by Mayor J. L. Bodie and officials from municipal affairs and mining resources.
The community notes new readers added this week including E. Harrison from Shoal Lake and Mike Mattation from Oakburn. The notice invites others to join the list and be featured next.
In spite of bad roads large crowds attended services at Rossburn and Vista. Rev. T B Pearson of Shoal Lake gave his last visit as supervising pastor and preached morning and afternoon. Four children were baptized at Vista and several youths received into church membership. The services featured music from Joyce Maxwell and the Vista Young People choir, closing with the Lord's Supper.
The Kiwanis Public contest was held at Birtle last Thursday evening in the Presbyterian Church. Percy Chegwin of Vista placed 2nd with 83, Ken Caldwell of Rossburn 5th with 79. Miss Margaret Jelfs of Foxwarr en is winner and will enter a provincial contest in Winnipeg. Percy spoke on Soil Conservation. Prizes: camera for 1st, desk set for 2nd, Waterman pen and pencil set for 3rd.
