Manitoba hog farming drives jobs and local growth in rural Manitoba
Hog farming sustains over 12,000 direct Manitoba jobs and more than $2 billion in regional economy. In Turtle Mountain a 1,300 sow farrow to nursery barn employs eight, a 3,400 sow farrow to wean barn employs fourteen, with payrolls 210000 to 400000 yearly. Hog barns provide roles across management, marketing, transport, production, health and safety, and administration with broad benefits packages. Taxes on barns mirror other farm buildings, with local municipal and school district contributions substantial. Hog manure is a mostly water liquid fertilizer rich in nitrogen phosphorus and potassium, regulated by annual manure management plans for larger operations.
