James Brown died July 7 at Winnipeg General Hospital after a short illness. Born June 23 1878 in Listowel Ontario, he moved to this district at age two and spent his life as a farmer and cattle dealer in Vista. He married Martha Chesney on March 27 1901. Funeral at Vista United Church with interment at Rossburn Cemetery. Survived by wife five sons six daughters 24 grandchildren two great grandchildren two brothers two sisters. Active pallbearers listed. honorary pallbearers named.
The District 4-H club rally was held at Oak River on Monday July 6 in warm sunshine with an estimated 410 club members competing. Sponsored by the Oak River Agricultural Society, the event showcased winning groups from Shoal Lake Miniota and Strathclair across sewing, farming, and display divisions with awards in several contest categories including girls demonstrations and square dancing.
Peter Hacikowski, 67, of Marco, Manitoba, died at Winnipeg General Hospital. Born in Austria, he lived in Canada 52 years and farmed in Marco. He married Annie on November 21 1910. Surviving: wife. sons Louis Joseph Jacob of Marco. daughters Mary Lazaruk Oakburn Helen Mushmanski Silverton Lena Yankowski Winnipeg. twelve grandchildren. sisters J Maliation G Sytnyk G Tokaryk Oakburn. Body taken to Oakburn for burial in Roman Catholic Cemetery.
A new 48 by 17 foot grandstand with 10 rows of seating is being built at the fair grounds this week. A sizable number have volunteered to help, and more volunteers are welcome. Construction began this Monday after the foundation was poured a week ago.
Local residents traveled to Brandon Calgary and Portage la Prairie for visits and camps. Families attended Girls 4-H events and Manhattan Beach trips while relatives returned from Winnipeg Fort William and Fort William weddings. Sightings include Ukrainetz Matiowsky Shaw Kemp Stitt Cleaver and Herchak families with extended visits and holiday activities in the region.
A July 12 sports day at Sandy Lake attracted about 600 attendees with strong profits. Erickson captured the baseball tournament 15 5 over Oak River. Dennis Clym earned the win. Oak River needed two wins to reach the final, beating Rolling River 17 2 and Sandy Lake 12 1. A Winnipeg winner claimed the fish derby with a four pound pickerel.
The town of Rossburn and nearby communities plan a full fair day on Tuesday July 20 with entries already arriving for the 45th Exhibit and Sports. Otto Elvers and his wife coordinate entries ahead of last year while a new grandstand expands seating. The E J Casey Shows midway and Binscarth Band will attend. A four team village ball tournament features Foxwarren Angusville McConnell and Rossburn with three 7 inning games and a 9 inning final starting at 6 pm. Horse races include Charriot Mile Half Mile and 6 Furlong plus Indian Pony. Kiddies races begin at 2 pm with bicycle events, followed by a Town Hall dance. Enter livestock and exhibits early.
A shaggy brown bear was seen roaming the D. Hrankowski farm on Friday July 9 while residents note inadequate supplies for visitors. Farmers report a new crop spraying method using a low altitude airplane on Bert Mitchell’s farm, spraying 205 acres in 1.25 hours with Mid-Western Air Services of Neepawa. Neighbors awoke to the low-flying plane, a sign of modern spraying. Town streets, previously rough this spring, have benefited from grading and are in good condition, and a hotel appears improved after a stucco update.
