Harvest Festival Weekend in Rossburn Outlines Events

The Rossburn Harvest Festival runs August 18 to 20 with Outdoor Bingo and a Teen Dance at the Town Hall on Friday night. Saturday hosts M.G.R.A. events at the Fair Grounds, Gymkhana, Jackpot Rodeo, horse races at 4:30 p.m., and chariot and chuckwagon races with trophies and prize money. An early morning Farmers' Horse Race at the Parkway Co-op on Mountain Ave and agricultural exhibits accompany a Senior Citizens Tea.

Manitoba Sets 1978 Deer Seasons in Northern and Southern Units

The Department of Renewable Resources and Transportation Services outlines 1978 deer seasons for Manitoba residents and non-Canadians. Northern unit runs November 13 to December 2. southern unit offers three periods November 20–22, November 23–25, and November 27–December 2 with permits for one season each. Licences are available at vendors. hunting is banned in refuges, Riding Mountain National Park, and non unit areas.

Murray Cormack Named General Manager of MPE Pool Elevators

Murray Cormack appointed general manager of MPE Pool Elevators effective July 1 replacing Robert E. Moffat. Announcement by president James D. Deveson notes Cormack’s prior role as operations GM and former deputy minister in Manitoba agriculture. Cormack is the son of Mr and Mrs John Cormack of Rossburn.

Longtime Rossburn couple marks 60th wedding anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Matt Olynick celebrated their 60th anniversary with a family supper at the Legion Hall on Saturday June 24. Born in the Ukraine in 1895, Olynick came to Canada in 1912 and married Dora Pushka in 1918. They farmed near Rossburn for four decades, later moved to Rossburn, and retired in Brandon in 1968. They have six sons and three daughters, plus 3 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, with two sons and a daughter predeceased. A second gathering at their home on Sunday June 25 was hosted by daughter Lena and daughters‑in‑law.

Recreation board plans new playground amid teen damage

The Rossburn-Silver Creek Recreation Board and Rossman Lake committee push a creative playground project after a weekend incident where 10 to 15 teenagers damaged the area. An age limit of 12 and under is set for the playground. Swimming lessons start Monday July 17 at Rossman Lake with last minute registration at 10 a.m. A 30 cent late fee applies. Instructors are Cheryl Michalchuk and Pat McGehee. A canoe clinic is scheduled for Wednesday July 19 with some canoes provided and a $3 fee. Meet by the swimming lesson pier at 7 p.m. A water skiing clinic is set for Wednesday July 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A $4 fee applies during swimming lesson registration. Participants in both activities may be combined and boats may be used from the boat launching pier.

Al Andrew honored on 95th birthday in Gillam region

A 95th birthday celebration for Al Andrew was held with guests including Mrs. Neil Wilkie and family from Gillam and Winnipeg. A buffet supper followed the afternoon commemorations attended by relatives Sherry Donna Norman and others.
