Manitobians to Help Stamp Out Starvation This Summer

Manitoba joins a two month drive to ship eighty thousand bushels of No 1 Manitoba Wheat to liberated Europe to feed hungry civilians. War Saving Stamps purchases convert to a bucket of wheat, funds raised through local committees and across stores and post offices in the province. Campaign runs July two to August thirty first with hopes to surpass the target, aiming to ease Allied food shortages amid wartime needs.

Casualty Figures Release From Defence Headquarters

Defence headquarters announced casualties through May 31 totaling 102 954 across army navy and air force with 37 964 dead and 2 866 missing for the full period. Earlier up to May 7 casualties were 102 075 with 79 more in late May as war in Europe neared end. Canadian forces in the Pacific trend remain active with some observers and RAF air personnel, while the Uganda cruiser is reported in action. In the First Great War, Canadian casualties totalled 190 092 with 62 817 dead. intake to armed forces by last September was near 1 000 000.

Birtle Service Stations Agree on Open Hour Trial

Five Birtle area gas stations reached a voluntary agreement to extend hours with a rotating schedule. Full service on Saturdays, after 6 p m on other weekdays by rotation, and single station service on Sundays. Success depends on public support and dealer loyalty amid postwar travel growth.
