Automobiles Taxed Like Juke Boxes In Canada

Howard B. Moore of the Federation of Automobile Dealer A ssembly urged tax relief at a Toronto press conference. He argued cars are essential for work and life and are taxed like nonessential items such as juke boxes, with federal taxes rising from 65 to 500 dollars on a representative sedan since 1939.

Hi School Bonspiel At Foxwarren Crowned Taylor rink

Hi School teams from Rossburn attended the Foxwarren bonspiel with two rinks, Leslie Taylor skip and John Mitchell skip meeting in the Grand Challenge final. Taylor’s rink won three games. Mitchell’s rink also posted three wins one loss. Event noted as enjoyable with a Burns program by Rossburn Literary Society. The rest of the text includes local jokes and a dance invitation.

Former Vista Resident Buried At Shoal Lake

Mrs. Alexander Black died at her daughter’s home in Alexander Manitoba on January 24 1952 after a long illness. Born in Scotland she married Alex Black in 1916 at Vista and lived on a farm east of Vista before moving to Shoal Lake where Mr Black died in 1946. She leaves a step daughter Mrs H Hawkes Riv ers and a step son Donald Black Truro NS. Funeral at United Church Shoal Lake January 28 with burial in Shoal Lake Cemetery. Pallbearers listed.

Rossburn Manitoba Farmers Union Holds First Annual Meeting

About 40 members of the Rossburn Local of the Manitoba Farmers Union gathered in the Club Room on January 23 for the local's first annual meeting. Bert Mitchell presided while Herb Schultz of Grandview spoke on the prairie economic picture and the need for stronger organization. Officers for 1952 were elected: President Bert Mitchell and Vice President Mike Sotas along with a slate of directors, and a general meeting set for February 15 to form committees.

Village Council Attends Manitoba Urban Association Conference

The third annual Manitoba Urban Association conference met January 15 and 16 at the Marlborough Hotel in Winnipeg with welcomes from Mayor Garnet Coulter and Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce President R. H. G. Bonnycastle. Mayor Ed Dow spoke for Boissevain delegates. The President E. A. Deacon lamented civic apathy and lack of candidates for nomination. The secretary treasurer P. F. C. Byars credited the association with municipal value and listed membership figures. Zone group elections pressured new representation, with Gilbert Plains and Rossburn noting changes. Premier Douglas Campbell and Municipal Commissioner Edmond Prefontaine addressed, praising late Sauveur Marcoux. The day closed with resolutions committee actions and pension discussions for municipalities.

Rossburn Legion Bonspiel Produces Public Club Winners

Eight rinks competed in Rossburn's annual Legion Bonspiel on January 30. Ken Holmes led the Rossburn foursome to the main event title while J Shipp's Russell rink won the secondary event. In early rounds Holmes beat Foxwarren and Shoal Lake beat Binscorth.

Wide range of grade in 1951 barley entries

Judges of the 1951 National Barley Contest note the widest range of grades in its history. A record 1,367 entries were received with Manitoba leading at 520, Alberta 467, and Saskatchewan 380. Shipping car shortages hindered many contestants, and Saskatchewan extended the final shipping date to February 2 due to access problems.

Local curlers shine in close open bonspiel events

Spectators enjoyed tight finishes as local and visiting rinks faced keen competition in Rossburn’s third annual open bonspiel at Angusville. Teams from Binscarth Shoal Lake Vista Rossburn and more competed with several rinks advancing to main events while others pursued consolation play. A post-event concert and dance supported by the Canadian Legion drew strong turnout. A later note indicated limited press details on Winnipeg Bonspiel results and prize lists. The Co op staff lost 12-5 to the Mitchells in a friendly at the ice palace with a turkey dinner follow up.
