The king died suddenly after a period of fair health following lung surgery. Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip were in Africa when the announcement came, plans arranged for their return. Elizabeth becomes the new monarch, the first queen to rule in fifty years.
The third annual Angusville Bonspiel finished after midnight on Friday February 1. Severe January mildness caused many afternoon games to be cancelled and extra play in the evening. Twenty eight rinks competed including six from Rossburn, two from Binscarth, four from Russell, one from Silverton, and fifteen local Angusville district rinks. Prizes awarded for grand challenge and consolation included sweaters, shirts, gloves, brooms, blankets, caps, handkerchiefs, fruit bowls, ashtrays, lighters, ties, and towel sets with donors listed among E Leifer, W Hembroff, D McIntyre, H Forsythe, M Parobec, and others.
Mrs. A C Johnston formerly of Rossburn was laid to rest in Dauphin Cemetery on February 4 1952 after a heart condition brought her death in Dauphin Hospital three days earlier. She was born June 1 1882 in Glasgow Scotland and married to A C Johnston in Falkirk Scotland in 1910. The couple ran a bake shop and restaurant in Rossburn until 1944 then moved to Dauphin. She was active in United Church Choir and local organizations. She leaves her husband and two Falkirk relatives.
Vista outlasted Rossburn 3 2 after a back and forth game at Vista. Karmazenuk opened Rossburn scoring, Bobby Brown tied late twice, and Keith Stitt and Miller added goals for Vista while Stitt led Rossburn with two assists.
Nearly 100 farmers attended in Angusville hall on Wednesday January 23 to hear Herbert Schultz son of J Schultz of Grandview Manitoba Farmers Union. Schultz outlined union growth from 6000 to 20000 members and 225 lodges, urged complete organization to achieve goals. Local No 56 now lists 364 members. Also notes Rossburn curling club schedule and players with win loss records.
After eighty eight days on the front, Sgt A Danyleyko was reported wounded. He is receiving medical care at Seoul Hospital in Korea and is in good condition. His wife Delores and son George live in Calgary, Alberta, and his parents Mr and Mrs Dmytro Danyleyko reside in Rossburn, Manitoba.
Village of Rossburn council met January 29 with full attendance and appointed Wm Antonichuk deputy mayor for 1952. A $1000 grant request for ditching and a request for road repairs were sent to Public Works. Fire Chief O Hodge discussed equipment storage and truck purchase. A siren issue and oil supply for streets were referred to Public Works. Rural Municipality of Rossburn met February 2 approving Birdtail street light by law and a $25 leadership grant, one Old Age Pension, culvert order, and a ward 4 herd by law petition. next meeting March 8.
A 1948 Model Prefect car a 1949 Ford tractor and a 16 by 26 garage were burned at the Yorks farm home near Birdtail last Tuesday January 29. Fire seen about 3 p.m. blamed on a short circuit in the car. Tractor and garage partly insured but car and contents not insured.
Manitoba residents around Riding Mountain National Park may hunt elk through February 28 1952. The extension was announced by G W Malaher Director of the Game and Fisheries Branch in the Department of Mines and Natural Resources. The season had been set to close February 2 1952.
