Voters in Birtle Russell elected Harry Graham of the Progressive Conservatives as MLA in the by election held February 20. Final tallies show Graham 2117, Shust 1406, Kostesky 1043 with 75.9 percent turnout from 6003 eligible voters. Poll 12 recorded the heaviest turnout with 311 votes.

Stebeleski Rink Leads Oakburn UCY Curling Spiel
The Oakburn Ukrainian Catholic Youth Club held a curling bonspiel February 21 to 23 with 15 rinks from Oakburn C.Y.M.K. Elphin stone and Dauphin U.C.Y. Winners were Ist Stebeleski and Ist Murray Black in two events. An open dance followed for curlers and non-curlers. Oakburn U.C.Y. thanks attending clubs for a successful event.

Ron Berry of Birtle placed first in the 12 to 14 year old 4H Public Speaking Contest held at Oakburn Elementary School on Friday February 21 1969. Gayle Sytnyk of Shoal Lake took second with Lyall Porter Janice Tokar Joy Butcher Dame Yarish and Susan McKerchar among other participants. Judges were Mrs C Matzuk Mrs A Majko and Mr Bill Wherrett. A lunch was served by the 4-H Home Ec and Garden Club.

Rossburn Bonspiel Opens with 32 Rinks Competing
The Rossburn annual men's open bonspiel began Saturday morning February 22 with 32 rinks entered from Rossburn Oakburn Vista Angusville and Russell along with others. Storms disrupted draws delaying games to Thursday and mild weather produced heavy swingy ice making play difficult. Completion is uncertain but expected to run into Sunday.
