Rossburn Ladies Curling Club hosted its annual bonspiel Feb 7 8 with 12 rinks including 8 local and 4 visiting from Shoal Lake Oakburn and Vista. A banquet followed, seniors honored, and winning rinks listed for two events.
Jackpot Bingo at Rossburn Town Hall Basement February 19 at 8 pm features 10 games at 5 dollars and 3 games at 10 dollars with a 320 dollar jackpot, plus consolation and blackout prizes. Valentines Tea and Home Baking Sale February 15 in the same hall. Field crops meeting February 24 in Silverton. Oakburn Curling Bonspiel February 28 to March 1 with supper and entries due February 26. Sweeney Todd melodrama March 6 and 7 at Rossburn Town Hall.
The R C S School Bonspiel occurs this Saturday the 15th with 16 rinks. After the bonspiel a dance is planned in Rossburn Collegiate auditorium. Basketball results from Elphinstone show girls 36 to 18 and boys 56 to 41. Rossburn teams travel again this Thursday to Elphinstone with semi finals set for February 17 and 18.
The Vista United Church Women held a Wednesday evening meeting at Margaret Miller’s home with five members present. There was no devotional due to lack of members, but the group discussed two topics and approved a cheque to Mrs. Stitt for church expenses. Plans for a spring tea were considered but not finalized. The secretary will order remnants.
The 4 H public speaking contests for 10 and 11 year old sewing club members were held last Thursday with seven competitors. Kathy Michalchuk took first, Elaine Tanasychuk second, Shelley Melnyk received honorable mention. Judges were Miss Clark Miss Hay and Mrs H Komhyr. On Friday the regional event at Rossburn Elementary drew a large crowd. Mary Dalton of the Birtle Home Ec Club won the trophy with Kathy Michalchuk of the Rossburn Sewing Club placing second. Judges were Mrs Lindsay Mrs Gloria Rubeniuk and Mr Harold Metcalf. A special thank you to the judges for both evenings.
Winners include Harris Barnesky Mary Saley Horace huk Peter Sidlar and Father Lehky among many noted names. Payouts range from 5 to 25 dollars with multiple ties and consolation prizes listed for Shoal Lake Oakburn and surrounding communities.
The annual Birtle Presbyterian Meeting will be held at Birtle on Feb 17. Those wishing to attend could contact Joan Baker. The next meeting will be at Florence Stitt's home in the afternoon with pillowcases for roll call. Reports will be presented and the hostess closed with a luncheon.
Birtle defeated Angusville 3-2 in overtime to take the North Central semi final series home game. Derlago opened at 5:40 of the first, Wowk tied 16:43, Furman tied 6:05 of the third, and Don Gies won with a 7:20 OT goal at Angusville Arena on Sunday February 9. Birtle drew 9 penalties to 14 for Angusville.
Don Kostesky of the New Democratic Party urges tax reform during a Rossburn meeting. He calls for a restructured tax system, lower burdens on low income earners, and taxes on property, estates, and education funded by general revenue. He opposes giving rich estates preference and supports local boards’ responsibility for schools.
The PC candidate Harry Graham upholds Premier Weir on placing economic issues before bilingual concerns, urging Western Manitoba focus on prosperity and criticising bilingual controversy. Ed Shust denounces Weir missteps, calls for standardizing Western curriculum, highway work, and faster federal action on grain drying and education funding.
