Cool tomatoes grow larger in cool start study
Canadian Science News reports University of Saskatchewan findings that tomato size increases when plants start in cool temperatures. Manitoba and Starfire varieties grown under low STR 15 to 18 C produced the largest fruit, with maturity slower but bigger yields than higher temperature regimes. Researchers note gibberellins may drive this effect and caution the cause is not yet proven.
