Rossburn Village Council approves bonds and by law plans

The Rossburn village council met with Mayor Earl Moffat in session August 19. Minutes were read and adopted, finances approved. Traffic fines totaled $22. The conversion of a $1500 Victory Bond to a new loan increases interest to 14.4 percent. A liquor license by law was given first reading for fall voters. One building permit valued at $9,740 was issued, lifting the taxable assessment to $461,370 and boosting current revenue by $416. Gordon Ament was named arbitrator for seven land transfer petitions. Rest Room and Fire Hall by law to be revised for fall elections with a $10,000 money by-law payable over 10 years at 5 percent. Excavations on the Erickson Russell road to begin soon.

Rossburn School Board appoints van drivers for routes

At Monday evening’s mee ting the Rossburn School Board opened tenders for van routes and announced the driving assignments. Hospital Aid Plans Purchase of Portable Electro Cardio graph

The Rossburn Hospital Aid met at Jessie Caldwell’s house on Tuesday Aug 19 with 10 members present. They budgeted for a laryngoscope and locker boxes, and planned buying a portable electrocardiograph costing about 535 dollars as a project. A bingo fundraiser is set for Sept 6 in Town Hall. Prizes donated by Mrs Steel and members’ contributions valued around 2 dollars each. Meeting to reconvene Sept 16 at Mrs Mary Shorrock’s home with Mrs Netta Smith assisting.

W A and W M S Hold August Meeting Notes

The W A and W M S met Tuesday August 12 in the Annex. The W M S started with a hymn and planned a tea for August 23. Members collected used nylons for overseas aid and urged drop-off with Mrs C Menzies. W A opened with a hymn, roll call led to a bazaar article, plans for a new Annex floor and Cook Books offered at 50 cents. A $5 registration fee was sent to the P C T C Camp.

Platter Party Tonight In Rossburn Dance Night

A new Platter Party opens in Rossburn at the Ukrainian National Home offering dancing every Saturday from 9:30 to 12:00 for a twenty five cent admission. Bring records to be played and invite friends to make the evenings lively.

Shower Honors Lesia Antonation

Lesia Antonation the bride elect of August 30 was honored at a shower on Saturday August 9 at the Ukrainian National Home Oakburn. Approximately 150 guests signed the guest book as the program arranged by Mrs Harry Kruk Mrs Steve Lusky Winnipeg and Miss Sylvia Antonation Oakburn featured corsages and a parasol decorated setting. A humorous poem was read and gifts presented on a large students cap drawn by Linda Kruk Winnipeg. Guests expressed thanks and the evening closed with lunch.

Bears and wolves sighted in district prompt actions

Reports of bears and timber wolves alarm residents in the district. Terence Fowler of the Mears district shot a 200 lb female black bear behind his house last Monday while garden work was underway. Separately Charlie Pawluk had to destroy a 2-year old heifer after a timber wolf attack.

First Service in New St. Theresa Church opens in Rossburn

Opening services for the new St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church in Rossburn were held on Sunday August 10 at 11 am. A large congregation from Rossburn and nearby missions attended. Clergy included Rev. Father Frank Kosakiewicz deacon Rev. Father Anthony Bajsik sub-deacon Rev. Father Suroviak celebrant and Rev. Father J F Cieplhy parish priest in charge. Lunch followed in the church basement served by the ladies of the congregation.

Oakburn Student Included In List For Special Award

WINNIPEG SPECIAL Manitoba's department of education prepared a 3650 surprise for 37 top Grade 12 students in the province. Hon Stewart E McLean announced these winners of Government Grade 12 scholarships the first time this award has been made. The 37 winners received cheques of 150 100 or 50 based on scholarship alone, with 12 in Winnipeg and 25 in rural districts. Highest marks earned by Helen Katharine Wedel Steinbach Brenda Louise Clark Portage la Prairie and Marlene McCaffrey Wir District No 11 includes Oakburn Melvyne Marianne Antonation Ronald Winston Cartwright Russell Nick Demchuk Elphinstone.

Double Ring Wedding at St Vladimir and Olga Greek Catholic Church

Lillian Olga Parobec wed Ewstachij Stan Dzwonyk in an August 7 ceremony officiated by Rev. Father Daniel Dzwonyk with a Belgium-based guest list and Ukrainian family ties. Bridesmaids wore pink, the bride carried a pale pink rose bouquet, and a town hall dinner followed at An gusville. Guests included relatives from Toronto Regina Winnipeg and Preeceville while the groom studies economics at Tilburg University.
