Syl via Wolowetz and Garnet J Kiely wed at St Marys Cathedral Winnipeg with Father Curry officiating. The bride wore a white summer brocade gown with Empire jacket and veil, followed by a reception at St James Hall. Attendants included Matron of Honor M Chomica and Bridesmaid Evelyn Yakinchuk.

Funeral and Wedding News From Oakburn and Area

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Yustina Wloychechowski at the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Oakburn with burial in the local cemetery. Born 1884 in Europe she came to Canada in 1913 settling near Oakburn, later moving to Oakburn town. The piece also notes a wedding reception for a couple from Angusville with about 300 guests and lists numerous out of town attendees and honeymoon plans in the USA and Southern Ontario.

Vista W A Holds Monthly Meeting At Chesney Home

The Vista W A held its monthly gathering at Mrs. Art Chesney’s residence with few attendees due to holidays and the busy season. Mrs. Stitt led devotional and read an article from the United Church Observer about The Queen at Kingston. Mrs. Hamilton was ill and unable to attend. members sent best wishes for her recovery. The meeting ended with The Lord’s Prayer and lunch served by Mr. Chesney.

Surprise Party Honors Mrs Strong on 78th Birthday

A surprise party was hosted at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Smith on August 9 honoring Mrs. Strong for her 78th birthday. About 19 family members and friends attended the gathering.

Betty Miller the bride elect for August 15th received a miscellaneous bridal shower on Wednesday evening. Mrs Mackedenski and family members escorted honored guests to seats as corsages were pinned and gifts displayed. Debra Baker and Linda Young delivered a wagon of gifts symbolizing a telephone switchboard before a luncheon closed the event.

Rossburn Rural Council Meeting Actions and Debates

The Rossburn Rural Municipality council met August 1 with reeve Shust presiding and all councillors present. They approved minutes and the July financials, heard petitions on oiling No 45 highway, and granted $50 for crow and magpie bounty payments. The CNR shed removal was refused after resident inquiries, a Valley School District dissolution request to join Rossburn was noted with a by law planned for Sept 8, and Doug Andrew received land drainage approval. Bills were paid and the meeting adjourned until Sept 8.

Funeral Rites for Samuel Sokolan Held in Russell

Samuel Sokolan aged 75 died July 18 at Sacred Heart Hospital Russell. Funeral service held July 17 at Uk Greek Catholic Church Russell with Rev Bezdel officiating. Burial at Russell Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers listed. Survived by three sons and four daughters, plus grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral prayers said Thursday at 9 p m.

Firefighters battle blaze in Birtle area

Rossburn Fire Brigade rushed to a 1:25 a.m. alarm from Birtle with 800 gallons of water, arriving ahead of Virden to save two buildings, the Savoy Theatre and Bill Melnyk’s barber shop. Neighbours aided, preventing greater disaster in a grand show of cooperation.
