A community variety concert closed the Rossburn Short Summer Course on August 14. Local Ukrainian Canadian Committee members oversaw 28 youths in Ukrainian studies with songs recitations violin and folk dance. Prizes were awarded to students in both classes for talent and achievements.
Rossburn The Midget Ball Club expresses thanks for district support in the recent playoff series and for transportation and uniforms loan from the Intermediate Club. Gate receipts totaled 83.00 with 15.00 to umpires 8.70 for advertising 14.00 for bats 8.50 for balls 1.50 for ball chasers 4.50 MMBA percentage 11.00 transport for out of town players 15.00 Kenton Ball Club third game 4.80 phone calls.
In Portage Juliore Mrs Harold Middlemass a miscellaneous shower was held in Legion Halls on Friday August 12. On arrival the guest of honor her mother and mother in law received corsages. Patsy was escorted to a decorated chair while Dolly Miller read the address. Gifts were opened and passed around for all to admire and Patsy thanked her friends for the useful gifts. Over 70 ladies attended a delicious lunch was served at Mrs L J Middlemass home.
A tuberculosis survey will be held in the Rossburn Municipal and Village area during the second week of September. Free chest X rays will be available at Stas¢ Valley School and Rossburn Town Hall with schedule details for September including times in the afternoons and evenings.
The Rossburn School District No. 128 rents extra space to open a fourth high school room to serve both resident and non resident Grade IX and X pupils. Non resident Grade IX pupils must pay a seven dollar non resident fee under section 272(4) of the Public School Act, with payment ideally from the pupil’s district of origin or by parent agreement before enrollment. Enrollment opens August 29 for children who will be 6 by December 31, 1955.
The W A held their regular meeting on August 9 in the United Church Annex. They decided to print a cookbook to be sold in December and extended an invitation to Senior Ladies for future meetings. Next meeting is September 13. Proceeds from serving meals at the Fair totaled $144.36 with a delicious lunch served.
A Fish Derby is scheduled for Sunday August 28 at Fish Lake with cash prizes equal to one third of entry money. The event notes good fishing conditions and reports visitors Mr and Mrs Jack Mitchell and Bruce from B C in town while the United Church Annex exterior nears completion.
Elsie Elaine Laycock daughter of Walter and Mrs Laycock wed Arthur Hans son of Mr and Mrs Butler at 3 pm July 30 with Rev I Marguerite Miller officiating. Kay Laycock maid of honor Enid Butler bridesmaid and Mrs Donald McKay matron of honor. Jan Harland best man with Bert Graham and Floyd McTavish as ushers. Organist Mrs Reg Gadd accompanied Miss M Laycock who sang The Lords Prayer. Reception in the school basement. Guests traveled from Winnipeg Brandon Neepawa Basswood Minnedosa Shoal Lake Angusville Solsgirth Welwyn Binscarth Birtle.
Summers hottest spell continues in Rossburn with harvests advancing rapidly. A near inch of rain fell Saturday night amid a dry week, July totals reach 4 inches, and rainfall to date tops 15.33 inches on the prairie. Highs near 90, lows around 43, mean 69.0, well above normal with thunder accompanying showers 38 times this season.
The Village of Rossburn council met August 16 with Mayor Moffat presiding. One livestock permit and two building permits were approved along with routine reports. Next meeting set for September 20.
Mrs. D. W. Fairbairn and Mrs. L. McDougall hosted a surprise gathering at Mrs. L. J. Middlemass home in Portage la Prairie on Tuesday evening August 9 honoring Mr. and Mrs. Harold Middlemass who wed July 25. Thirty five friends and neighbors attended.
