Harvest Festival Brings Weekend Fun to Rossburn

Rossburn hosts its annual Harvest Festival with a Friday Giant Outdoor Bingo offering 1350 in prizes at the fair grounds, followed by a Teen Dance in the Town Hall with Copperfield. Saturday features a Pancake Breakfast, Gymkhana Show, Jackpot Rodeo, multiple races, horse and chariot events, invites, exhibits, a Senior Tea, Market Gardens displays, and a Cabaret to cap the day.

Weather modification report urges controls in Manitoba province

The Manitoba Water Commission urges government oversight of weather modification activities. It recommends a designated agency to monitor operations, ministerial approval for any modification, and clear jurisdiction. The fall 1977 study reviewed provincial, national, and international practices and the Canada United States agreement.

The Department of Highways released July tenders for provincial road work across Manitoba. Tender 1880 for gravel base on PR 274 south of Gilbert Plains drew Bradley Sand and Gravel of Brandon at 300 402. Tender 1890 for PR 482 north from Shellmouth dam attracted Atchison Construction Limited of Foxwarren at 204 205. Tender 1903 for PR 474 from PR 42 to Selsgirth saw Keating Barthers Limited of Silverton as the low bidder at 140 003.

Warmest Day of Summer Last Friday at Rossburn

Rossburn logged a very warm spell with Friday reaching 92 degrees the warmest August reading since 1970. Sunday morning brought only light rain while reports to the north and west noted a deluge. Rossburn North recorded 1.05 inches from the thunderstorm.

Stewart Family Reunion Honors Dunddee Stewarts at Lawless Farm

A Stewart Family Reunion in honour of Mrs Davina Stewart and Mr Alex Stewart of Dundee Scotland was held at the Lawless farm on Sunday August 6 with about 52 relatives from Williams Lake North Battleford Prince Albert Winnipeg Neepawa Dauphin Grandview and Rossburn. A lawn buffet and a campfire sing song followed.

The Village Council of Rossburn met August 10 1978 at 7 pm with Mayor Rick Plaisier and Councillors Swintak Droscoski Kostecky and Stefanuk present. Law student Janice Tokar wins four Manitoba prizes

Janice Tokar of Rossburn earned four scholarships and prizes for first year law at the University of Manitoba. She won the Canada Law Book Company Limited Prize in Law, the Mr. Justice and Mrs. I Nitikman Prize in Law for top Tort standing, the Alumni Association Scholarship for second highest year one overall standing, and the Winnipeg Life Underwriters Association Bursary for academic merit. She begins second year this fall at the Faculty of Law.

Grant of $10,000 to Rossburn Silver Creek Recreation District

Tourism minister Bob Banman announced a ten thousand dollar recreation grant to Rossburn Silver Creek Recreation District to hire a full time recreation director. The grant uses a formula based on municipality participation population density and district tax assessment. For Rossburn Silver Creek the grant is ten dollars per square mile and three thousand dollars for the tax assessment category.

Oakburn Cheremosh Dancers Win First At National Ukrainian Festival

Oakburn Cheremosh Dancers captured first prize in the intermediate Ukrainian group dancing competition at Canada's National Ukrainian Festival in Dauphin. The group, trained by Mrs. Linda Labay, featured Marianne Prosyk Julie Tutkaluk Glenda Stebeleski Michelle Michalyshyn Janice Michalyshyn and Cindy Stebeleski, performed Aug 3 to Aug 6 with other finalists before a large audience.
