The Birtle-Russell Liberal nominating convention on April 19 with about 100 attendees named Doug MacIsaac as Liberal candidate for the constituency. MacIsaac, born in Scott Saskatchewan, a veteran educator, and current superintendent of Pelly Trail schools, received strong support and a standing ovation.

Mid-West Baseball League Elects Officers and Schedules Play
The Mid-West Baseball League held its annual meeting at Strathclair on April 24. E Kilimnik of Russell was elected president with Graeme Shaw of Cardale as vice president. Jim Flynn remains commissioner and Lorraine Kilimnik is secretary. Entries must reach Glennis Scott in Minnedosa by May 7. Play begins May 22 and ends by late June with playoffs in the first two weeks of July.

Rossburn Minor Baseball Meeting Sets Coaching Call
A May 3 1977 meeting at Rossburn Elementary School invites residents to join coaching for six Rossburn area teams including a girls softball squad. Rossburn Collegiate badminton players excel in Pelly Trail Division events at Russell and Birtle. Blaine Veitch and Barry Mackedenski won boys doubles, Diane Walmsley and Angela Kalyniuk took girls doubles, earning Zone X trophies and provincial/Regional eligibility. Grade IX teams also placed finalists and advance to their district tournament.

Provincial High School Badminton Championships Held in Winnipeg
The Provincial Championships will take place April 29 and 30, 1977 in Winnipeg at Sturgeon Creek and Oak Park High School. Boys and girls singles doubles and mixed doubles compete in a double knock-out format with about 300 players from seventeen zones, starting Friday at 4 00 p.m. and continuing all day Saturday.

NDP Nominates Peter Merry At Manitoba Convention
Premier Schreyer denied joining the Liberal Party amid Ottawa rumors. Peter Merry won the NDP nomination on the second ballot with 179 votes of 284 at the Birtle Russell convention on April 22. He stressed agriculture as rural life’s cornerstone and praised farm and small business support from the NDP government. Dennis Trinder and Zane Wenitoway backed Merry and urged unity for the upcoming campaign.
