Village council approves Terrazyme dust control and ends rural fire service

The Village of Rossburn held a special meeting on April 28 1977 led by Mayor Louis Kurchaba. It approved buying Terrazyme to reduce street dust after Highway Department indicated no oil. and resolved to discontinue fire protection services to the Rural Municipality of Rossburn effective June 1 1977 due to rising costs and lack of municipal support.

R C 1 Student Places Well In Math Contest

Blaine Veitch of RC I placed fourth in District 1 of the Manitoba Mathematical Contest for Grade XII students. He also made the Manitoba Top 100 list. The contest is sponsored by the Canadian Mathematical Congress and the Actuaries Club of Winnipeg, with most Top 100 competitors from Winnipeg.

Park L G D Council Approves 1977 Expenditures And By Law

The Local Government District of Park held its April 15 1977 meeting in Russell Manitoba with Reeve Novalkowski presiding. Council approved the March 14 minutes and March 31 month end statement. Officials discussed the 1977 road program for wards 3 to 7 and approved accounts totaling 6180 72. Regular by law 400 1977 first reading and a 6900 capital plan were adopted along with subdivisions and a beer garden permit for Seech Lake Resort on July 3 1977 and tax sale set for December 15 1977.

Automobile Poker Derby Held Near Rossburn

The Rossburn Arena Building Committee sponsored a 53 mile automobile poker derby Sunday May 1. Participants traveled via Marco and Olha to the arena with hog dogs and drinks at the checkpoints. Winners included Chris Mohr first 19.20 and Doris Caldwell second 14.40. Silent Riders top prize Miron Swintak 11.20. A hidden number turkey drawn by Jim Andrew. Special cash draws awarded to Orest Smychnnik and Janette Huston.

Rural Rossburn Council Sets Dates and Appointments

The Rural Municipality of Rossburn held special meetings on April 20 and April 27 1977. Motions included assigning Tax Sale Certificate 6 parcel 1 4277 for 16.35 and costs to Ann Hamilton, forming a Rossburn Silver Creek Recreation District, appointing Reeve John Mitchell to its board, accepting Calvin Browns resignation as patrol operator, advertising for a patrol operator, reviewing applications for Secretary Treasurer, arranging interviews with four candidates, and adopting annual estimates and a five year capital plan for submission to the Municipal Budget and Finance Branch.

Village Council Adopts Rossburn Estimates for Year and Five Year Plan

On April 25 1977 at 5 00 pm the Rossburn village council met in special session with Mayor Louis Kurchaba presiding and councillors Miron Swintak Harry Drosdoski William McKietiuk present while Rick Plaisier was absent The council adopted the annual estimates for the current year and the five year capital expenditures program as set forth in Schedule A and made it part of the resolution The action formalizes the village budget and long term spending plan for the community.

Rural Fire Destroys Lumber At Mike Saley Farm

A Monday afternoon blaze at Mike Saley's farm, driven by strong winds, destroyed about 6000 feet of spruce and poplar lumber, 10 cords of railway ties, about 50 telephone poles, and a lumber planer. Investigators believe the fire reignited from smoldering shavings and manure, sparked by dry, gusty winds.

Abrupt End To Dry Spell Across Manitoba and Saskatchewan

A heavy rain and several thunder showers Wednesday night halted a severe drought across rural Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Earlier, on Saturday April 30, record heat and gale force winds produced widespread dust storms, with temperatures ranging from 23 to 63 degrees.
