Rebel Colonel John Owen Captured and Executed in Marion County
A notorious rebel Colonel named John Owen, known for burning bridges and depots and firing on trains last summer and fall, was captured in Marion County last Saturday week and shot on the spot after pleading for prison. The troops told him taking prisoners was no longer practiced, then executed him before a line of soldiers. This reportedly follows General Schofield’s order against bridge burners and bushwhackers. Related notices include mail contracts awarded to A. E. Fisher and Samuel Slemmons, a note on greenbacks rising in the South, a presidential land sale in Oregon, and a Rolla Mo post office list of names.
