Old Third Iowa in Review at State Fair Grounds
Thousands crowded the amphitheater and pad dock at the state fair grounds to bid farewell to the One Hundred and Third United States Islands, the old fighting Third of Iowa, as S600 soldiers passed in review before Governor Harding and staff. The review, tendered by Governor Harding and Colonel Bennett, was the fair’s biggest feature with Des Moines crowds claiming the regiment as their own. About 4,000 men in olive drab marched, marking Iowa’s effort to furnish fighters for the trenches.
