Pike’s 1805 Upper Mississippi Expedition and Death
Zebulon Pike led 20 men from St. Louis on August 9 1805 to explore the upper Mississippi. They met Sauk and Black Hawk leaders, viewed Dubuque and Prairie du Chien sites, and identified Pike’s Hill as a fort location. Pike died in the War of 1812 after producing the first accurate report of the upper Mississippi.
