Reminiscences of Old Rolfe Seventies Schoolhouses
In Powhatan township the first 1866 brick county schoolhouse near the cemetery was followed by a wooden daguerrean car used as a school and polling place. Teachers included Sarah Thom and George Strong, with later shifts by others as the Strong family built a new school in 1868. The white painted Strong school became a community center and a religious site, while residents lived simply in calico dresses and homegrown gear.
