Former residents recall early days near Rolfe and Des Moines
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Warren of Des Moines visited Rolfe and Plover area, recalling the old Weir N. Peterson farm northwest of Rolfe later occupied by the Kerns. Warren bought the land for 13 an acre as much of the land lay underwater, noting two ponds, a boat on the larger pond, and early hunting and fishing memories. He described building a barn, planting an orchard, creating a windbreak, and a slow windlass well dig. The well water remained reliable, while wells then were scarce. The Warren brothers reportedly faced a near-flooding incident when a soft spot caused water to rise rapidly.
