Iowa politics take center stage as Herring and Gillette near agreement on the new deal while GOP moves to consolidate offices and cut costs. Leases and building plans prompt disputes over spending and independence from taxes. Comptroller Porter argues that department reorganizations will trim expenses and offset highway budgeting against farm-to-market needs.
Following a Iowa State Safety council meeting plans advance for a cooperative public safety education program under Karl Fischer. The legislature did not specify funds for highway safety education, shifting control to the safety department and council leaders. Republican chairman James Milroy may retire as Des Moines panel meets June 23, while Milroy’s exit contrasts with Democratic factional struggles.

Mrs Charles Ham dies in Lutheran hospital Fort Dodge after long illness. Bill Ryen visits from Long Beach to George Ryen home. Spencer siblings visit Lost Island trip. Schonberger families visit Albert Mitchell for birthday. D M T school bus drivers elected for next year. Wesley Lehnus to drive replacing Fritz Johnson.
Nine girls plus a teacher attended the D M T Merrymakers 4 H gathering at Edna Johnson’s Friday afternoon. Guests included Jean Jacobson Ottosen Dorothy Joens Ida Jane Roberts Ruth Roberts Grace Hertz and others. Demonstrations covered dishwashing and kitchenware while a health talk and music study filled the afternoon. A two course lunch was served and the next meeting is set for Shirley Heathman’s on June 23. Kenneth Marine has been on the sick list Evelyn Sernett shopped in Des Moines. Mr and Mrs William Sernett and family were dinner guests at the Ed Pechan home. A group gathered at George Marine’s home to honor the Meyers of Manson.
In Bradgate the Get Together club held a Sunday picnic dinner for husbands and children. Several local residents visited, including Mr and Mrs Will Laning and various neighbors. A bicycle accident injured Bobby Neemar, and numerous residents traveled for events such as 4-H Rally day in Humboldt and a rural chorus broadcast from Ames.
