4 H County Fair Opens in Pocahontas County
Pocahontas County starts four days of free events on July 22 with judging of science mechanics and art exhibits, livestock weigh ins, and a pork barbecue. The schedule includes horse show, dairy and flower judging, 4 H demonstrations, mini tractor pull, and a Sunday finale with dress revue and FRA concert featuring midwestern band FBA. Tickets $2.00 in advance, $2.50 at gate.

Retirement supper honors George Beckord founder of Beckord's Hatchery
A July retirement supper celebrated George Beckord after 37 years as founder and General Manager of Beckord's Hatchery. About thirty attendees received an engraved watch. The firm evolved from a Rolfe chick hatchery started in 1939 to a large egg producer supplying swine flu vaccine doses.

IEBN Plans New Channel 21 Transmitter Facility
The Iowa Educational Broadcasting Network signs a contract to build a transmitter facility for Channel 21 in Fort Dodge, with Channel 50 approval for KVFD and KVFD moving back to its Fort Dodge tower this fall. IEBN buys KVFD’s tower in Bradgate and may use the existing Channel 21 transmitter temporarily during the transition. The project aims to activate Channel 21 soon despite cost considerations. A July Pocahontas County Historical Society meeting at Laurens museum grounds on July 19 features a family picnic and grounds tour plus a planning discussion for community service improvements.

Rolfe City Council Approves Minutes and Appointments
