Credit for feeding versus breeding in dairy cows
The text argues that gains in dairy production come from both better feeding and care and improved breeding and selection. It cites experiments showing 9 to 50 percent increases from better feeding and care, noting the exact share depends on prior conditions. The key point is that improved feeding, care, and breeding can raise production substantially and profitably regardless of which factor gets the credit.
Device to Separate Cream
The cream separator is a mechanical device using centrifugal force to separate cream from milk. It claims to capture almost all butter fat and save five to ten dollars per cow annually, while improving skim milk value when warm and clean. With five or six cows, it pays for itself within a year and can last a decade with proper care.
Winter Butter Making Tips for Churn Time
The guidance suggests keeping cream at 58 to 60 degrees during churning and at 75 degrees shortly before churning. Draining buttermilk and rinsing with 60 degree water two to three times, then final revolutions. Salt is mixed evenly by working on a flat board.
Milk Handling Rule for Milkers
Milkers should be allowed to milk only with dry hands. Wetting hands with milk is a filthy habit and can cause cows teats to chap in winter. Milking should be quick and thorough with no violent jerking. After milking, milk should be moved to the milk house promptly.
