The A L D Club met at Flossie DeVaul’s home with 13 members as DeElda Gunderson led the business session and programs on Women’s status in the U S and the art of living. Nearby, relatives gathered to celebrate 80th birthdays for Richard Buck and Alva Buck, with music, cards, and refreshments. A Rolfe library shower honored Mrs. Robert Kirchner with corsages, readings, and a gift-roll pin autographed by guests.
County Extension Director E I Rosenberger and Iowa State weed expert E P Sylvester advise spraying fresh stumps with a brush killer and fuel oil to prevent sprouting. Mix one quart brush killer with five gallons fuel oil, apply with a three gallon sprayer at low pressure to runoff, ensuring bark is dry and cambium exposed.
Mrs. James Ramsey hosted Chapter BB on Monday January 9 with strong attendance. Mrs. Mike Schmidt led the program showing brides from various overseas places, followed by a delicious lunch. The next meeting will be hosted by Mrs. Virgil Rickless on February 6.
Garfield Hustlers 4 H Club met Wednesday night January 4 at the Light Co lounge for Dad's Night with dads invited to a pancake supper and entertainment. Dorothy Turley Bette Brinkman and Lois Hodaway prepared food and washed dishes. Awards went to Phil Brinkman for outstanding 4 H alumnus and to Dallas Ives for five years in 4 H club work and for grand champion Shorthorn steer. Arlo Ives showed slides from a trip through Mexico and Colorado. Next meeting will be at the home of Dan and Roger Allen. Stephan Hodoway, reporter.
The Department of Social Welfare report shows Pocahontas County had 179 Old Age Assistance recipients totaling 14179 with an average 79.21 per case. Three new cases opened, none closed. Aid to Dependent Children served 144 people in 6088 total 156.10 per case with one new case and two closures. Two on Aid to the Blind at 89 each. Six on Aid to the Disabled averaging 115.33 per case totaling 692 with one new case. Overall 331 residents received public assistance totaling 21137 in December. State census for 1960 lists 2,767,537 residents with 69,554 or about 2.5 percent on aid.
Sunday dinner guests in the Rolfe area included Mr and Mrs a Wetsherns followed by a list of visitors from Grundy Center Lyle Kilbourn home. The Stowell anniversary event at Plover was attended by Mr and Mrs Marshall Otto and family.
Louis J. Elbert of Pocahontas announces Pocahontas County’s 1961 savings bonds quota at 1 176 700. Treasury salutes bankers for 20 years of volunteer service as January honors the program. Elbert urges citizens to buy extra bonds to exceed the 1961 quota.
