66th Iowa General Assembly Opens Amid Budget Battle
The 66th Iowa General Assembly begins with Democrats controlling both chambers but slim Senate margins raise veto and override stakes. Lt Gov Art Neu may preside in the Senate. Budget adoption looms as major item with tax policy and corporate tax reform debated. State revenue projects foresee a downturn after years of growth despite current tax collection ahead of projections. The traveling sidewalk at the 1893 Columbian Exposition is noted as historical context.
