A severe snowstorm closed D M T on Friday with blocked roads and no school. Local social life centers on visits from Rolfe and Pocahontas, a series of card parties, dinners, and gatherings at homes across the community, with multiple households hosting neighbors and relatives.
Mrs Leslie Struthers visited with her mother Mrs Jen nie Evans at Albert City. Mrs Will Schrier and daughter Leta Mae visited sister Mrs J Ryan at Pocahontas. John Lawman and Orville attended at Rodman with Thomas Lawman. Nels Truelsen and family visited Fort Dodge, and Truelsen and Jean McClurg visited Mrs Truelsen at Lutheran hospital. High school and junior high plan a third week March declamatory contest with about 20 entrants. D M T 4 H met with 16 members and lunch served by Mrs Ripperger. Divonna Vaughn joined Phi Sigma Phi at Cedar Falls. Ardell Peterson also initiated. The Brinkman family reunion honored Mrs May Caffray of California.
The Garsfield Go-Getters hosted the 4 H girls clubs joint meeting at county chairman Mrs. Arthur Vaughn's home on February 11. Programs included talks on cold prevention conservation on my farm and lighting planning. Shirley Fisher was elected temporary chairman for D M T girls with next meeting set for February 25 at the schoolhouse hosted by Agnes Thompson and Charlene Hronek.
County agent E. J. Schmuecker reports flax can be grown as a cash crop under the 1939 AAA plan when used as a nurse crop and still classified as non-depleting. Early April sowings yielded higher returns in Ames trials, with failures mainly for later plantings. Disease resistant varieties at Bison and Red Wing support Iowa flax production amid corn rotations.
