A personal reminiscence from J A Schroeder of Rolfe Iowa recalling boyhood threshing with a horsepower machine in the early 1980s. He describes the big red machine driven by four horses the hum of power the stakes in place and an imagined daily race on the ground beaten by hooves. He notes fewer modern conveniences then yet suggests people were content.
In a tiny 12 by 16 foot schoolhouse built in spring a teacher from Fort Dodge, Anna Allen, shared lessons and meals with scattered prairie families. After a winter of hardship, the first public gathering brought a festive Christmas for pupils and parents, highlighting a blend of life in the sparsely settled region.
County Historian Matie L. Bailey reflects on pioneer days when small schoolhouses and McGuffy readers formed the core of education. She notes youth were taught virtue and Godly respect through classic poems and songs, as the prairie and Indigenous way of life faded.
A 12 year old Aberdeen boy Daryl Salhus asked Santa for a wooden or artificial leg after an accident. WNAX radio responded by creating the Daryl Fund collecting donations from 96 counties and surpassing 1273 dollars before Christmas to cover hospital bills and support his family.
D.M.T. School notes celebrate Christmas party fun and birthday, film strips and movies, operetta completion, and gifts. Grades 1–2 report arithmetic progress and reading, while grades 5–6 cover division, spelling, pronouns, and basketball drills. Freshmen cover Treasure Island, book reports, monomials, equations, and biology topics.
Ring out the old year and ring in the new at the Presbyterian Church where Church School for all ages starts at 10:00 and Morning Worship at 11:00 with a sermon titled The Search for New Things. Junior Hi W F travels to the Rally in Algona at 2:00 while Senior Hi W F hosts a New Year’s party at Jean Robinson’s. trustee meeting Monday at 7:30. Teachers and Workers Conference previews quarterly work. Choir practice Thursday.
O M McQuary pastor leads Sunday service as the congregation says goodbye to the year and welcomes the new one in a fitting ceremony.
The two ordinances of the church will be celebrated during the service. New members will be received. Infants may be presented for baptism by prior arrangement with the pastor. On New Year’s Eve the Senior MYF sponsors a Watch Night gathering with youth from other churches as guests. A gala opening and worship service conclude the event.
The Lutheran Church invites members to a New Year s Eve fellowship at 7 p m featuring a potluck lunch. Sunday school and Bible classes start at 9 45 a m with morning worship at 11 a m Family Night around 6 p m includes a salad or hot dish potluck and desserts provided by the committee members listed.
In Iowa, Johnny Taylor and Warren Kunce from Yale trapped two wolves. the larger weighed 45 pounds and the other 30 pounds. Raymond Boedeger of Tipton sustained cuts below the eye when a duck smashed through a car windshield, needing stitches. Mrs. Hilda Ness of Soldier broke her arm in a freak accident after getting it caught in a drawer. Milton Hart of near Essex died after an 85 foot fall while tightening bolts on a water tower.
