Decline in Birthrates Flows Through Society, Studies Find

Dr. O. E. Baker of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics reports a marked drop in births across the United States. Fewer births each year and remigration patterns shrink the young population, with about 10 percent fewer children under age ten and 17 percent more people aged sixty five. The trend, if continued, could reduce population over the 10-year span ending 1939. Urban areas show larger declines due to higher costs of raising children. Among social classes, professional families show the steepest drop while unskilled laborers have relatively higher birthrates.
