Pioneer Women Laid to Rest in Local Services

Two elderly women from the community were buried this week. Mrs. Anna Wilson (nee Ostrom) of Roland died January 30 1930 at age 78 after 47 years in the area and a long church member. Her funeral was held at Salem Lutheran Church with burial in Roland cemetery. Mrs. Dora Henderson (nee Chelsvig) of Des Moines died February 1 1980 at 67. She moved between Des Moines Austin and Roland before settling with her daughter in Roland. a Des Moines service preceded a Salem church funeral and burial at Mamreland cemetery. Her pallbearers were her six sons, with many relatives present.

New Canning Company Head Succeeds Argall at Marshall

S. Argall resigns as general manager of the Marshall Canning Company effective March 1. F. W. Brewer will assume duties then. The firm runs several Iowa canneries including Roland. Argall has led since Merritt Greene left and will join Midwest Packing this spring. Brewer, longtime Western Grocer Mills president, takes over all duties.

Meeting of Warren Farm Bureau Women Weaves Baskets

A January 31 gathering at Mrs Homer Duea’s home in Warren Township brought together fourteen Farm Bureau Women from Districts 2 8 4 and 9. Co operators Mrs Martin Minde Mrs J A Christian and Mrs O N Egeland led a basket weaving lesson. Several baskets were crafted and a lunch was served by Mrs Duea.

New Road Equipment Arrives for Story County Patrols

One of the new Caterpillar tractors bought by Story county board arrived from Nevada. Irwin Grindem, patrolman for Lafayette and Howard townships, will use it to patrol township roads and it will be stored with other county road equipment in Story City. Another tractor will be secured for C. C. Helvig, patrolman for the county trunk roads.

Feeding meetings in Story county next week

A series of six hog and cattle feeding meetings will be held in Story county next week. One session will occur at the L. J. Ruland farm northwest of Roland on Tuesday February 11 at 10 a m. County Agent H P Hanson arranged the program and C W McDonald of the Iowa State College extension service will speak. Attendees will receive the latest feeding information and have questions answered.

Knife Found in Old Bergen Church After 37 Years

B J Britson recalls losing a putty knife in a church partition during a 37 year old remodeling. Workmen tearing down the partition uncovered the knife between boards exactly where it had been, in good condition.

Durham cattle sale set for February 8 at Iver Sampson

Sixty head of high grade Durham cattle will be sold at the Iver Sampson sale February 8. The executive committee of the Farmers Institute have prevailed upon the Ladies Cemetery Society to serve a dinner at the Thompson basement Friday and Saturday. Amos J. Spring has sold his farm in the southwest corner of Howard township to Ed N. Egeland.

County officials call first annual township meeting

Nevada hosts the first annual gathering of township trustees and road supervisors to discuss funding and improvements. Jacob Erickson was elected a director at the Story County Independent Telephone Company meeting last week. The Independent basketball team lost to Jewell 83 to 80 at the opera house. The Roland lineup included Stutzman Boyd Dale Teig Hanson and Rod. Andrew Enes returns from Spokane Washington after years away. Jordan Larson wins southern Hamilton county spelling contest. Miss Myrtie Hanson marries Adolph Eggland at her parents home.

Roland Players Lead In Iowa Conference Showdown

Three Roland men star for top Iowa Conference teams as State Teachers College Cedar Falls and Luther College Decorah clash in a pivotal game. Reuben Sandren and Benjamin Duen of Cedar Falls and Lester Shafland of Decorah anchor their squads, both unbeaten this season, asSandren returns from injury to help Cedar Falls defeat Parsons College 12 to 9 at halftime and pull away for the win. Haberichter and Sardwen also shine for the Teachers.

Butter substitutes condemned at Iowa dairy meeting in Ames

The Iowa State Dairy association urged farmers to quit butter substitutes to restore prices. Grocers selling substitutes were warned they harm the industry. January cream checks will fall about 1.7 million dollars from last year due to butter price changes. A state tax on oleo margarine was endorsed to support state inspection.

Re Elect Officers of Rol and Farmers Creamery

The Rol and Farmers Creamery board met to organize for the year and re elected President K. P. Teig Vice President E. B. Christian Secretary S. L. Bielefeldt Treasurer Eli N. Nelson. L. H. Larsen will continue as buttermaker. A committee of M. J. Rod Fred A. Waugh and Eli Johnson was appointed to persuade local merchants to use more butter over substitutes.

Garman Herigstad welcomed brief Alaska visitors

Mr and Mrs Garman Herigstad hosted Thursday to Monday guests Mr and Mrs Arnold Undem of Tiller Alaska. Undem and wife traveled from Nome in January, bought a car in Seattle, rode to Chicago by train due to heavy snow, and plan eastward to New York before spring return. Undem manages a store buying station and runs a reindeer ranch for Lomen Reindeer Co, with several northern stations.

Music Meet at Nevada Sets Subdistrict Iowa Contest

Nevada earned the Iowa High School Music association subdistrict contest hosting on March 14 and 15. Twenty central Iowa schools with 700-plus students participated last year in Ames. thirty events in three classes plus a single glee club class. Class A includes Ames and Boone. Story County to Hold Bovine TB Test This Year

Story County, an accredited bovine tuberculosis area, schedules the triennial test this year. Dr. J. M. Wininger of Boone heads the work in Story County replacing Dr. Born and will assist local veterinarians. Dr. S. J. Charlesworth began testing local herds this week.

Birkeland Wins Ribbons in Iowa Corn Yield Test

Henry Birkeland of this place earned multiple ribbons at the Iowa Corn Yield test during Farm and Home Week at Iowa State College Ames. He ranked ninth and tenth in District 8 and seventh in District 7, plus fourth in the South Central Open-Pollinated class with Reid Yellow Dent entries. A record 639 total entries, 286 open-pollinated, competed in the event.

Vikings Fall to Jewell Aces in 39 to 20 Loss

The Jewell Aces defeated the Roland Vikings 39 to 20 in a Tuesday night game at Jewell. Jewell led early and extended the margin as the contest progressed with scoring by Lear Erickson and others, while Roland's Sanford Shafland Thompson and Noel Thomas contributed points. A large Roland crowd attended, and the Vikings prepare to enter the Marshalltown state tournament in late February with 82 teams vying for the title.
